Examples of Community Engaged Learning at UNCW

Students in this project worked to improve the health and wellbeing of Brunswick County residents through the provision of health promotion education, in both English and Spanish, to 4,000 members of the parish community at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church in Shallotte, NC, Brunswick County. Students within the College of Health and Human Services, native Spanish speakers or are near completion of a Spanish minor or have Spanish as a second major, translated health promotion/education strategies that include relevant community resources.

2019-2022. Funded through a Strategic Initiative award.

A Multi-year Strategic Initiative designed to provide sociology and criminology students with multiple opportunities to engage in community-based research with a community partner. The CRAC model developed in this initiativestrategically integrates community-based research projects into 200-, 300-, and 400-level courses in the sociology and criminology curriculums. The initial three-year scafolded project, "Social Determinants of Crime", focuses on the Wilmington PD's District 3 Jurisdiction.
