In May, the Watson College of Education celebrated the achievements of our most recent graduates who earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees!

Residency Licensure and TA to Teacher Programs

There are many pathways to becoming a teacher. UNCW’s Watson College of Education offers Residency Licensure and TA to Teacher programs for professionals seeking teacher licensure while working full time in the classroom.

WCE will host a Regional Eggs & Issues Breakfast in Partnership with The Public School Forum of North Carolina on June 14, CESTEM will host a PK-12 STEM Education Conference on June 20, and an information session for the Workforce Learning & Development program will be held June 26. Join us!

PDS Partnership Celebration

On April 30, WCE hosted an event to celebrate the re-signing of PDS school-university agreements, the national recognition recently received for the strength of WCE’s partnerships, and the WCE students who completed internships in PDS partnership schools this spring.

WCE Alums Named NHCS Educators of the Year

Latasha Howard-Mott ’11 is New Hanover County Schools’ Middle School Educator of the Year, Hannah Moon ’08M is High School and Overall EOY, Sydney Kong ’15 is Elementary EOY and Brent Hall ’09, ’17M is Principal of the Year. The awards were announced May 9.

Amy Blessing Receives Roy E. Harkin Award

Amy Blessing, PDS partnership teacher and kindergarten teacher at Rachel Freeman School of Engineering, is the recipient of the spring 2024 Roy E. Harkin Award.

Anay Soto-Gomez's journey to becoming a teacher was driven by the desire to ease the burden of children who struggle to find a sense of belonging. The UNCW Watson College of Education undergraduate hopes to inspire students to see themselves in her story.

Madi Sutton ’24 is the recipient of the Grace M. Burton Promise of Excellence for Diversity and Inclusion in Teaching Award. Madi graduated in May with a degree in Middle Grades Education.

Katie Riley ’24 is the recipient of the Exemplary Intern Award for an intern in an undergraduate degree program. Katie earned her degree in the Education of Young Children.

Savannah Everhart Receives Exemplary Intern Award (MAT)

Savannah Everhart ’24M is the recipient of the Exemplary Intern Award for an intern in a Master of Arts in Teaching graduate program. Savannah earned her master’s degree in Elementary Education.

Earth Day Celebration at Head Start

CESTEM, the Center for Assistive Technology and Jr Seahawk Academy joined forces to celebrate Earth Day and North Carolina Science Festival at Piney Grove Head Start on April 22.

Virgo Hosts Monthly Events; Opens 2024-25 Enrollment

Throughout the 2023-24 school year, D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy hosted monthly family and community events for all stakeholders to learn together. The UNCW school, which serves K-8 students in downtown Wilmington, has opened enrollment for the 2024-25 school year.
