Outreach Initiatives
ARTworks
ARTworks is an arts integration program presented by the UNCW Arts in Education Alliance. Through a special partnership with the UNCW Office of Cultural Arts, Watson School of Education and Watson School of Education Professional Development System, the initiative reaches beyond its campus and community to bring effective arts integration programs to elementary schools throughout Southeastern North Carolina.
To achieve its mission, ARTworks provides students and educators:
- Live performance experiences in local and regional venues
- Professional Development Workshops focusing on both the shared and unique curriculum goals of classroom teachers and arts educators
- Educational curriculums designed by arts and education faculty members at UNCW
- In-school residencies offering individual schools the opportunity to work closely with an artist and participate in the artistic experience
- Classroom assistance provided by traveling teams of pre-service teachers studying at the UNCW Watson School of Education
In order to integrate successfully the arts into the classroom, ARTworks focuses on two specific age groups with distinct curriculum goals. The second and third grade curriculum uses music, art, dance and drama to teach the fundamentals of storytelling, while building confidence in story recall, fluency and reading comprehension. The fourth and fifth grade curriculum uses music, art, dance and drama to develop and enhance an appreciation of how different cultures shape and influence our world, emphasizing themes of global and regional diversity.
ARTworks demonstrates to elementary educators practical strategies for using the creative and performing arts to accomplish the goals set forth in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. The initiative places special emphasis on the areas of arts education, language arts, social studies and computer technology. Additionally, the initiative seeks to encourage ongoing collaboration between classroom teachers and arts educators for developing comprehensive and complementary curriculums.
TAPPS: Technical Theater for High School Teachers & Students
The Technical Assistance Program for Public Schools (TAPPS) is a new initiative of the Office of Cultural Arts, which strives to enhance the performing arts in local public schools by providing on-site consultation, training, resources, and creative and technical assistance for drama teachers and students.
