CALL for APPLICATIONS and NOMINATIONS Academic Leadership Positions

Academic Affairs invites applications and nominations for two academic leadership positions: 1) Interim Associate Vice Chancellor & Dean of Undergraduate Studies and 2) Interim Associate Provost for Research & Dean of the Graduate School. Both roles will result from the announced reorganization of Academic Affairs and reflect modifications of existing positions, created to strengthen our engagement in undergraduate education and our productivity and visibility in research and creative activity on our campus. Individuals appointed to these reconfigured positions will lead current and emerging programs and initiatives at UNCW in undergraduate education and research / graduate education, respectively, and guide the development of these new leadership roles. Appointments will continue until the successful completion of formal, open searches, for which interims will be eligible.

  • The Interim Associate Vice Chancellor & Dean of Undergraduate Studies is a full-time administrative position reporting directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

The Interim Associate Vice Chancellor & Dean of Undergraduate Studies will provide leadership for the campus’ engagement in undergraduate education and oversee the operations and activities of the Honors College, the Center for Teaching Excellence and Faculty Leadership, University Studies, the Quality Enhancement Plan, general education assessment, international programs, and the Isaac Bear Early College program. Responsibilities will include overseeing activities pertaining to undergraduate education, including University Studies; providing advocacy on undergraduate academic matters; facilitating the development of new and revised undergraduate courses and curricula; working with faculty on academic planning and policy development pertaining to undergraduate education; overseeing the publication of the UNCW catalogue; collaborating with University College in establishing and implementing learning goals for UNI101; and coordinating the administration of for-credit undergraduate courses and programs in collaboration with the deans of UNCW’s colleges and school.

Minimum requirements for the position include a current appointment as a tenured associate or full professor at UNCW. Previous leadership experience in higher education; strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills; experience with undergraduate program development; and significant experience in Basic Studies/University Studies are required. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of or strong interest in honors programs, international education, and learning assessment.

  • The Interim Associate Provost for Research & Dean of the Graduate School is a full-time administrative position reporting directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

The Interim Associate Provost & Dean will serve as the university’s chief research officer while overseeing the Office of Research Services and the Graduate School. Duties will include providing leadership for the campus’ engagement in research, scholarly, and creative activity as well as graduate education; working with faculty to enhance and grow research and scholarship at UNCW, including undergraduate involvement in faculty scholarship; overseeing millennium campuses or programs; overseeing contract and grant administration and compliance; promoting technology transfer; encouraging and facilitating the development of new and revised graduate courses and curricula; working with faculty on academic planning and policy development pertaining to graduate education; providing advocacy on graduate academic matters; increasing graduate enrollments; and assessing graduate program performance in collaboration with the deans of UNCW’s colleges and school.

Minimum requirements for the position include a current appointment as a tenured associate or full professor at UNCW. Previous leadership experience in higher education; strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills; and significant experience in grant writing, extramural funding, graduate program development, and graduate education are also required.

Materials submitted by finalists will be posted for review by the UNCW community. Priority consideration will be given to applications received by November 26, 2012, but will be accepted until the positions are filled. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2013.
