UNCW Onslow Extension Site has appointed new Interim Director
It is with great regret that we inform you of Dr. Beth Barton’s resignation as the UNCW Onslow Extension Site Director and the UNCW Military Liaison effective December 31, 2010. Dr. Barton has been appointed the Personal and Professional Readiness Program Manager with the Marine Corps Community Services aboard MCB Camp Lejeune. She left with this statement:
“I have truly enjoyed my tenure as Director of the Onslow Extension Site and UNCW Military Liaison. Both of these positions have been exceptionally fulfilling and the reason for our success in Onslow, as well as all of our military efforts on the main campus, are due to your commitment, diligence, and problem-solving capabilities. I know how hard you work—and how far out of your way to go for our students. This has been an incredible team, and I am honored to have worked with all of you.”
The UNCW Division of Academic Affairs and the Onslow Extension Site would like to congratulate Dr. Barton and express to her our sincere gratitude for a job well done. She served as Director since January 2004 and UNCW Military Liaison since 2006.
Dr. George (Bill) Ayers, Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work, has been appointed as the Interim Director for the UNCW Onslow Extension Site and the UNCW Military Liaison. He has served as an academic advisor and faculty member at the Onslow Extension Site since fall 2009.
Dr. Ayers was placed in the retired Reserves of the U.S. Marine Corps inJuly 1991 until he fully retired as a Colonel in December 1999 (42 years, 1 month, 2 days cumulative service). Heserved in the first Gulf War and developed a prevention program for Post Traumatic Disorder for which he received the Legion of Merit.
Dr. Ayers had a long career in Public Mental Health, beginning in 1966 and ending in retirement in 2003, when he retired from his position as Deputy Director of Education Training and Research with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. He also held a position as a Professor of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
Upon his retirement Dr. Ayers was awarded the Order of the Palmetto (the state's highest award for service) by the Governor of South Carolina.
As the UNCW Onslow Extension Site Interim Director and UNCW Military Liaison, Dr. Ayers will continue to maintain the already excellent relationships between UNCW and Coastal Carolina Community College, MCB Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River, and the Major Operational Commands.
