Campus Recreation
The Department of Campus Recreation organizes and administers a variety of structured and self-directed recreational services that enhance the overall wellness of the university community.
This goal is accomplished by offering a wide variety of recreational activities, conducting educational workshops and providing professional training. The Department of Campus Recreation provides a multi-faceted program that includes: aerobics/fitness programs, intramural sports, the Discover Outdoor Programs office, club sports, and special events. Campus Recreation at UNCW takes a "something for everyone" approach to programming.
Club Sports
Club Sports at UNCW are a step down from NCAA Division-I sports, but still compete at a high level (the men's golf club sport team captured the 2010 National Championship), travel, and play in contests inter-collegiately. Thus, club sports are very distinctive from intramural sports.
The UNCW Club Sports program is made up of UNCW Student Organizations, and is adminstered by the Department of Campus Recreation. If you are interested in obtaining more information about club sports, please visit the Campus Recreation Homepage. Current club sports include:
- Baseball
- Crew
- Cycling
- Equestrian
- Field Hockey
- Gymnastics
- Ice Hockey
- Lacrosse (Men's & Women's)
- Rugby
- Sailing
- Soccer (Men's & Women's)
- Softball
- Surfing
- Swimming
- Tennis
- Triathlon
- Ultimate Frisbee (Men's & Women's)
- Volleyball (Men's & Women's)

Intramural Sports
Intramural sports provide a more casual opportunity to participate in athletics against fellow UNCW students, faculty and staff. Typically, each intramural sport will be divided into men's, women's and co-ed leagues, with a league champion being crowned in each sport (after a playoff format, in most cases). Intramural sport contests are all held on-campus, with very few exceptions. If you are interested in obtaining more information about intramural sports, please visit the Campus Recreation Homepage. Current intramural sports include:
- Basketball (1-on-1, 2-on-2, and 5-on-5)
- Bocce Ball
- Cornhole
- Disc Golf
- Flag Football
- Horseshoes
- Kickball
- Softball
- Soccer (Indoor and Outdoor)
- Tennis (Singles and Doubles)
- Volleyball (Indoor and Sand)
UNCW students enjoy free, unlimited use of the Student Recreation Center, which was opened in 2000. Providing all the amenities of an off-campus fitness club such as cardio and weight workout areas, multipurpose courts, an indoor track, a group exercise studio, and a rock climbing wall, the Student Recreation Center is open seven days a week for convenient access.
Construction has begun on a 95,000-square-foot addition to the Student Recreation Center, which will expand the cardio and weight workout areas, provide additional multipurpose courts, and add a new aquatics facility with indoor and outdoor pools. The center will remain open during the expansion, and the project is currently slated to be completed in September 2012.
