Need 2 Lead
n e e d t o l e a d ( N 2 L ) i s a b o u t d e v e l o p i n g l e a d e r s
Created and organized by the University of North Carolina Wilmington, N2L is designed for action-oriented high school sophomores (rising juniors) who want to make a difference in their communities.
This intense leadership weekend consists of dynamic workshops and programs designed to enhance leadership skills. Twenty-five outstanding high school juniors from diverse backgrounds will participate following nomination by their school or community leader and a competitive UNC Wilmington selection process.
The ideal N2L candidate is passionate about a community or school issue and may be involved with a service organization through which they hope to affect change. UNC Wilmington will help participants make a difference by modeling strategies for the successful implementation of a dream service project. The goal is to inspire their vision, teach them to constructively challenge the process and implement their plans.
Leadership Weekend May 15 – 18, 2008
The N2L experience gives you the opportunity to meet exceptional young high school juniors who want to make a change in the world and want to build their leadership skills. The encouragement from your peers and the training for the workshop leaders will enable you to turn your dream project ideas into a reality.
Need 2 Lead consists of three core components:
- Leadership Weekend at UNCW (May 15-18, 2008)
- Mentoring (May 2008 – Spring 2009)
- Leadership Symposium (Spring 2009)
You’ll learn about team building and public speaking, essential skills for any leader. Plus you’ll engage in workshops on:
- Creative Thinking/Problem Solving
- Fundraising
- Inspiring a Shared Vision
- Modeling the Way
- Challenging the Process
- Enabling others to Act
- Encouraging the Heart
- Implementation of the Plan
N2L participants engage and learn with other emerging leaders through a challenging
ropes course experience and multiple training workshops. All workshops are designed to give you the skills necessary to make your dream service project a reality.
We are targeting current high school sophomores (rising juniors) so that they can use their junior year of high school to create and successfully implement a dream service project under our supervision.
A student’s eligibility for Need 2 Lead requires nomination by their high school guidance counselor, principal, teacher or community leader. In addition, they must meet the following criteria:
1) A minimum grade point average of 3.5;
2) A demonstrated commitment tocivic/community engagement and/or exhibited
noteworthy leadership qualities;
3) A desire to attend a four-year college or university.
An important component of the Need 2 Lead leadership experience is the dream service project which participants work on for approximately six months to a year after attending the leadership weekend. Therefore, students will utilize their junior year of high school to create and successfully implement a dream service project under our supervision. Before arriving to the University of North Carolina Wilmington, you will identify an issue that you care about. During the leadership weekend, your mentor will help you create an achievable action plan that addresses that issue!

Today’s youth are striving to make a difference in their communities and the world. They need our support. As a guidance counselor, principal, teacher or community leader, you can inspire the next generation by nominating up to three rising high school juniors by Jan. 15, 2008 for the N2L leadership experience. Nominated students will receive a congratulatory letter and informational e-mail detailing the application process. Applications must be postmarked by February 22, 2008.
Selection for Need 2 Lead is competitive, and space is limited to 30 students.
Participants will work in small groups directed by UNC Wilmington students. These mentors are trained to coach N2L participants in creating an achievable action plan for their service projects. In addition, UNCW mentors will offer distance coaching beyond the weekend by e-mail and phone until the service projects are completed.
Becoming a mentor for the Need 2 Lead programs allows UNCW student leaders to connect with future student leaders.
Participants are encouraged to return to UNC Wilmington in spring 2009 to showcase their completed projects with their N2L mentor. Participants and their parents will enjoy this day-long event, culminating with a banquet with UNC Wilmington administrators.
