Recent Events for the Cape Fear Chapter
Homecoming TEALgate It was elbow to elbow and the atmosphere was electric! Even though the forecast for that day was daunting, 400 Seahawks from across the nation dusted the snow and ice off of their wings and soared into UNCW’s campus for the Homecoming TEALgate. The heated tent kept everyone warm and dry as they enjoyed food and beverages – including hot chocolate! Different sides of the tent challenged each other’s spirit by chanting, SEA – HAWK. Karen Wetherill, Interim Dean of the Watson School of Education, gave a warm welcome and recognized members of the Dean’s Club and Parent’s Council. The event shows that Seahawks overcome any weather to let their UNCW spirit soar! Take a look at photos!
12.16.09 TEALgate! Seahawks flew in from far and wide to TEALgate before the UNCW Men’s Basketball team took on Wake Forest. Over 130 people packed the tent, the music was playing, food was enjoyed and drinks were flowing…the hot chocolate kept everyone warm despite the temperatures. Coach Benny Moss came to pump up the crowd with an overview of their season so far and what to expect for the highly anticipated game. Special guests Chancellor DePaolo and Sammy C. Hawk also graced the group with their presences. Some Seahawks even purchased the first ever TEALgate shirt! Even though the Seahawks fell behind 11 points in the end to the Demon Deacons, the crowd was loud and Seahawk Pride was running high! Check out photos!
Fall Edition 11.05.09 Local Cape Fear Area alumni and friends met at Dockside for the Alumni After Work Fall Edition. Everyone enjoyed appetizers and drinks as they caught up with one another while overlooking the water. Dockside generously donated all of the appetizers for the event. Ken Dieppa, ’09 M, president of the Cape Fear Chapter took the stage half way through the event and chose the names of the winners for the door prizes. Leather business card holders and two pairs of tickets to the upcoming Dec. 16 TEALgate v. Wake Forest were given to the lucky winners. Even though the sun went down early, Seahawk fun went on late into the evening!
Summer Edition 7.16.09 Despite the threatening weather, our UNCW Seahawk Alumni were not deterred from hitting up Dockside after work! Close to 70 alumni attended the Alumni After Work – Summer Edition. Alumni mingled with one another while munching on a large variety of appetizers generously donated by Dockside and enjoying evening drink specials. Five lucky alumni were the winners of fabulous UNCW Alumni Association door prizes! The evening was so much fun that almost everyone stayed beyond the event to enjoy each other’s company and the summer night view of the Intracoastal Waterway! Check out photos!
Spring Edition 3.19.09 On the last day of winter, Seahawks gathered to welcome Spring back to Wilmington at the Alumni After Work held at the Main Street Brewery in Mayfaire. Around 30 Seahawks gathered to share spirits and memories. There were several fantastic raffle prizes that were awarded including two tickets to the Cape Fear Alumni Chapter’s Grand Slam Jam which is coming up on May 12, 2009 at Brooks Field. Seahawks gather at local restaurants each season to celebrate and catch up with friends.
5.12.09 Play ball!
Nearly 150 Seahawk baseball fans, made up of alumni and friends, gathered on the left field deck to cheer on our UNCW Baseball team as they took on the East Carolina Pirates. As the event got started, guests were greeted by Coach Mark Scalf who mingled his way through the crowd and gave everyone some inside tips on the UNCW team. Seahawk alumni enjoyed hotdogs (a ballpark favorite) and extras generously donated by Parchies. The UNCW Alumni Association ordered the beautiful weather that kept smiles on everyone’s faces. As the night came to a close, the only thing that we would have changed was the result of the game, but despite the score everyone had a great time! Check out Photos!

1.31.09 As the sun started to set on Homecoming Saturday, things were just getting ramped up under the TEALgate tent. More than 350 Seahawks soared in from all over the nation to reconnect in the TEALgate tent outside of Trask Coliseum. The first to arrive were the Alumni of the Year and the Young Alumni of the Year arriving in style straight from the Homecoming Parade! Seahawks enjoyed North Carolina BBQ while catching up with friends, listening to music and playing tailgating games.
TEALgates always honor all UNCW alumni, but this Homecoming TEALgate also honored two very special groups, the Class of 2004’s five year reunion and members of the Dean’s Club. Dean Roer, Dean of the Graduate School and Research greeted the crowd along with Coach Benny Moss who got everyone pumped up for the upcoming game. At the end of the evening as TEALgaters trekked into Trask to watch the Seahawks take on the James Madison Dukes, they carried many fun giveaways with them as a memento of a special UNCW Homecoming evening.
12.3.08 On Wednesday, December 3, more than 75 Seahawks from far and wide gathered under a tent outside of Trask Coliseum to rally before the Seahawks took on East Carolina in Men’s Basketball. The chill in the air surely didn’t damper the group’s Seahawk Spirit! Alumni talked Seahawk basketball and played Corn hole and ladder golf and as they enjoyed hamburgers, chili dogs and a smashed potato bar (the crowd favorite). As it got closer to the game, Coach Moss stopped by to pump up the crowd right before they headed into Trask. Even though the Seahawks took a fall to ECU, the UNCW Alumni where there in full support.
