WSE Alumni Chapter
2008 Distinguished Alumna of the Year
Dr. Shirley Prince received a B.A. degree in English from UNCW in 1974 and taught English at E.A. Laney High School for the next ten years. Along with her teaching, she continued her studies at UNCW and received her Maters degree’s in 1987 in Educational Administration and Educational Supervision. Shirley received her doctorate degree in Educational Leadership in1993 at N. C. State University. Her Dissertation entitled: A Study of the Correlation between Gains in Student Achievement and Gains in Effective School Practices was published in the Educational Research Quarterly- June, 1995 and received an award from the International Society for Educational Planning in 1993.
Shirley is a well-known and highly respected educator. Her accomplishments and awards for her contributions to education and her community are vast and vary greatly. She served as teacher, School-Level Evaluator and Evaluator Trainer during a transitional time in education in New Hanover County. From 1989-1995 she was named the Director of School Improvement and Accountability and was later selected as the Executive Director of Quality Development from 1995-97. She was and still is a “trailblazer” in “Quality Initiative”. Her program was the first school system- wide effort to be recognized with an award from the North Carolina Quality Foundation. In 1997, Shirley left New Hanover County Schools to become the Deputy Superintendent of Program Services for Gaston County School. She provided the leadership for 54 schools and 30,000 students by spearheading the creation of the counties strategic plan for instruction. She involved over 200 educators and community members in this successful effort. Two years later, Shirley left for her opportunity to lead Scotland County Schools as Superintendent.
Shirley soars in her community work, as well, and was named in 2004 as “The Business/Professional Woman of the Year by the Laurinburg Pilot Club. In 2007, she received the “Trailblazer Award” and the “North Carolina State Superintendent of the Year” from the North Carolina School Superintendents Association. These are just a few of the accolades given in her name and honor. Please join the WSE Alumni Chapter as we recognize and congratulate Shirley for the example she is for all alumni, not just our educators and administrators. We fondly salute, Dr. Shirley Baddour Prince!
