UNCW alumni to challenge ECU alumni at Shark’s game
The Cape Fear Alumni Chapter has accepted the Wilmington Sharks summer league baseball team's invitation to take on ECU in the UNCW and ECU Alumni Challenge. Join UNCW alumni and friends at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Legion Stadium's Hardee Field on Carolina Beach Road. Game tickets are $2 for anyone wearing UNCW apparel or who shows a UNCW alumni or faculty/staff ID card. Gates open at 6 p.m. Between innings, a UNCW alumnus or student will take on an ECU alumnus or student during the team's promotional contests. New slate of officers to lead alumni association
Ray Cockrell A new slate of officers for the UNCW Alumni Association was approvedat the board’s January meeting and will begin serving July 1. Ray Cockrell ’88, ’96M is chairman. Serving with him will be Ed Vosnock ’71, vice chair; Donis Noe ’86, ’94M, treasurer; and Nadine Batuyios ’73, secretary.

New board members elected to three-year terms to the core board are McGavock Edwards ’96 and Dianne Matthews ’00. Re-elected were Becky Fancher ’78, Neal Leeper ’93 and Tricia Staton ’93 (one-year term). Dru Farrar ’73, David Keifer ’96 and Tish Brissette ’75, who were serving one-year terms as alternates, were elected to the core board, serving three-year terms.

Elected to one-year terms as alternates are Jennifer Adams ’00, Melissa Blackburn-Walton ’87, Garon Bodor ’88, Patrick Gunn ’00, Jason Wheeler ’99 and Jenean Todd. Steve Hobbs ’73 was re-elected to a one-year term.

Members leaving the board of directors include: Shanda Bordeaux ’92, former chair; Alex Smith ’86; John Wilson ’98; Lloyd Hinnant ’88, Triangle Chapter representative; Diane Evers ’81, Watson School of Education representative; Leigh Powell ’86, Communication Studies Chapter representative; and Amy Stuart ’95.

Alumni board recognizes outstanding chapter and board rookieMark Tyler and Becky Fancher, awards chair
AAGA, the African American Graduates Association, received the alumni association board of directors Soaring Chapter of the Year Award for its numerous achievements over the past year. These include successfully endowing the Ralph Parker Scholarship and the establishment of the Senior Sankofa ceremony. Mark Tyler ’87 was honoredwith the Rookie of the Year Award for his outstanding contributions as a new board member.

Martin ComachoNursing grad awarded grant
for Pennsylvania graduate school

Martin Camacho ’02 received a prestigious Advanced Nurse Traineeship Award from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Camacho, who was selected from a pool of 25 applicants for this $15,000 federal grant, plans to pursue his master’s degree in Pennsylvania’s Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program. MORE

Burnett awarded French Fulbright teaching assistantship
Emily Burnett ’02 received a Fulbright French Government Teaching Assistantship to spend 2002-03 teaching in a French school. MORE

Nominations sought for new faculty award
The UNCW Alumni Association Past Chairs’ Council is seeking nominations for the Distinguished Faculty Award to recognize faculty who have made a difference in the lives of their students. The deadline is July 15. The award will be presented at convocation in August. MORE

Ebony Ebron ’02. Miss UNCW, will compete in the Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant Saturday, June 22, in Raleigh.

 


Events

Lectures
Philip Furia, film studies and creative writing, will host the screening of four Hollywood musicals as part of the Fabulous 50 Cents Fantail Film Festival aboard the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial. The films, starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, are shown on an outdoor screen on the ship’s deck beginning at 8:30 p.m. every Friday in June. In case of rain, movies will be shown in the visitor center auditorium. Tickets are 50 cents per person per film.

Performances
The Persuasions, dubbed the “kings of a cappella,” will perform at 8 p.m. June 22, in Kenan Auditorium as part of the Summer Fun Jam 2002. Tickets are $10 for general admission, free to UNCW faculty, staff and students with ID and are on sale at the auditorium box office. The Office of Campus Diversity is sponsoring Summer Fun Jam. Upcoming jazz concerts include the debut of the Cape Fear Jazz Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. June 24 in Kenan Auditorium; tickets are $5. UNCW Faculty Jazz Combo performs at 7:30 p.m. June 26 in Kenan Auditorium; tickets are $5. UNCW summer jazz workshop students perform at 7:30 p.m. June 29 in Kenan Auditorium; no charge for admission.

Exhibits
Randall Library is hosting the exhibit “UNCW Student Creations 2002” through Aug. 4 at the library’s first-floor art wall and entrance. The display features artwork by students in Ann Conner’s advanced painting and drawing classes and Aaron Wilcox’s advanced sculpture class.

“CommonVisions: Photographic Explorations of Unity in Diversity” will be on display through Aug. 5 in the University Union Living Room. Based in Asheboro, the CommonVisions Project involved members of various racial and ethnic backgrounds who took photographs for the display using disposable 35mm cameras.

Student artworks of various mediums are on display in the Warwick Center Lobby. A reception to honor the artists is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 29.

UNCW Alumni Association - We encourage all men and women who attended or graduated from Wilmington College and/or the University of North Carolina at Wilmington between 1946 and 2002 to become involved. Active status requires a contribution of $25 or more to the UNCW Alumni Association each fiscal year (between July 1-June 30). Your contribution supports the many programs provided to alumni and students. Spring 2002 graduates have until June 30 to become active in the association for half-price with a $12.50 contribution.

Provost Cavanaugh named president

of University of West Florida; Interim named
John C. Cavanaugh, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, was named president of the University of West Florida May 24 and expects to assume his new duties July 1. Paul Hosier, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, was named interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, effective June 28. Senate proposes smaller cuts
Faced with a worsening revenue forecast and a projected 2002-03 budget shortfall of up to $2 billion, Governor Easley and the NC General Assembly are considering deep permanent cuts to the operating budgets of all state agencies, including the University of North Carolina. MORE

Claude Howell gets star on Walk of Fame
Claude Howell, UNCW Art Department founder, received a star on the Celebrate Wilmington! Walk of Fame June 2 at the walk plaza located near the Cotton Exchange. Howell’s posthumous induction coincided with the premiere of a 20-minute documentary about his life and artwork created by the Louise Cameron Art Museum.

UNCW launches Film South Project; Work on first film underway
Work is underway on the first film of an innovative community/university partnership and economic development collaboration, the Film South Project. Based on the prize-winning novella “Poachers,” by southern Alabama mystery writer Tom Franklin, the film will be directed by Lamont Johnson. Designed to promote the “Southern experience through film,” Film South Project will create a unique educational experience for UNCW students. MORE

YWCA award winners
Hathia Hayes, associate professor of curricular studies, won the YWCA Women of Achievement Award in the education category at the organization’s annual fund-raiser May 16. Hayes was the first female department chair at UNCW and the only elementary language arts consultant for the State Department of Public Instruction. Former nursing school professor Adrienne Abbott Jackson received the health and wellness award. She is the founding president of the NU Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the UNCW honorary nursing society.

Psychology professor wins statewide honor
Antonio Puente received the Mary Clarke Award from the N.C. Psychological Association. This annual award honors a psychologist in the state who has made a long-term contribution to the profession. Puente, who serves on the policy and planning board of the American Psychological Association, is also president-elect of the association’s Clinical Neuropsychology Division and editor of Neuropsychology Review. He was one of the first psychologists to testify as an expert witness regarding the state law prohibiting the death penalty for persons who are developmentally disabled.

Tutoring available for K-6 students
College students working in the Watson School of Education Ed Lab tutor children in grades K-6 in reading/language arts. The 75-minute one-on-one sessions will be offered Mondays through Thursdays, July 1-25. The $112.50 fee includes diagnostic testing. For more information, please call 910.962.3633.

Piano sale set for June 16
The Music Department will host a piano sale from noon to 6 p.m. June 16 in Kenan Hall, Room 114. Instruments for sale are part of an institutional loan program whereby the department uses pianos for instructional purposes. The sale includes grand pianos, baby grand pianos, consoles, spinets and high-level digital pianos. For more information, call 910.395.6873.

Janet EllerbyEllerby named top graduate mentor
Janet Ellerby from the Department of English received the 2002 Graduate Mentor Award presented by the Graduate School. The award was established to recognize faculty who excelled in teaching at the graduate level and who have an established record of mentoring students who complete master’s programs. The latter includes not only guiding students’ research activities while at UNCW but helping them become independent scholars and professionals. Ellerby will be recognized at the fall faculty meeting in August where she will receive a $1,000 prize and a medallion.

Brownell adds Jones to staff
Byron Jones Byron Jones, who has played a key role in the development of the University of Denver's program over the last five seasons, was named assistant men's basketball coach. Jones joins a pair of alumni, Bill Donlon ’99 and Marty McGillan ’90, to complete Coach Brad Brownell's staff. A native of Oklahoma City, Jones served as an assistant at Denver, Eastern Kentucky and Central Oklahoma following an outstanding playing career at Northern Oklahoma and Eastern Kentucky. MORE

Ice cream for scholarships
Join Coach Brad Brownell June 22 for the ribbon-cutting and grand opening of Cold Stone Creamery. From noon to 4 p.m. the store will donate 50 percent of its sales toward UNCW athletic scholarships. The creamery is located next to Buffalo Wild Wings in Monk’s Corner.

Jamie HemmingwayLate rally falls short in extra-inning loss
UNC Wilmington's baseball season came to an end May 22 when George Mason survived a late Seahawk comeback in a 7-6 victory in 13 innings in an elimination game of the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Championship at Coy Tillet Sr. Memorial Field in Manteo. The third-seeded Seahawks, who finished the season at 36-21, battled back from three runs down in the top of the ninth, but fell short when the Patriots scored on an error in the 13th. MORE

Vaughn, Hemingway earn First-Team honors
UNC Wilmington senior shortstop Kiley Vaughn was named Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-Conference while junior outfielder Jamie Hemingway also landed First-Team honors. Pitchers Brian Whitaker and Blake Cross, meanwhile, captured Second-Team honors.

Ankrom named Coach of the Year
Kevin Ankrom Second-year head track and field coach Kevin Ankrom picked up his second CAA Men's Coach of the Year Award. Ankrom led the Seahawks to their sixth consecutive CAA Men's Championship. Twenty Seahawks combined for 41 All-CAA honors at the championship meet at the Sports Backer Stadium in Richmond. UNCW has now won the award six straight years with Ankrom being the third coach to win the honor. MORE

Seahawk Club director accepts post at Dayton
Chris Delisio, who has served as executive director of UNC Wilmington’s Student Aid Association (Seahawk Club) for the last four years, has resigned to become director of athletic development at the University of Dayton. Delisio, 33, joined the Seahawks in 1998 and orchestrated a successful athletic fund raising organization. The Division for University Advancement will host a farewell reception for Delisio 2-4 p.m. June 19 in Alderman Hall, Room 108H. MORE

Phillips named assistant director of Seahawk Club
Matt Phillips, who has been involved with successful fund-raising campaigns at N.C. State, Virginia Tech and East Tennessee State, was named assistant director of the Seahawk Club. Phillips, 30, has spent the last three years at East Tennessee State in a variety of positions, including executive director of the Pirate Club, assistant athletic director for development and marketing, ticket manager and assistant athletic director for external affairs.

Seahawk Club golf tournament on June 24
The Seahawk Club Golf Challenge, an annual tournament benefiting athletic scholarships at UNCW, is scheduled for June 24 at Magnolia Greens Golf Plantation. A shotgun start begins at 11:30 a.m. featuring a Captain’s Choice format using 10 percent of the team’s total handicap. There will be four flights, with awards presented to the top four teams in each flight. The entry fee is $125 per individual, $500 per team and $575 for a corporate sponsorship. Whitaker selected by Padres
Senior righthander Brian Whitaker was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 27th round of the 2002 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Whitaker compiled a mark of 7-8 in 2002 despite limiting opponents to a .221 batting average and a 3.00 ERA. Whitaker was named All-CAA second team as a senior and was an ABCA All-South First-Team honoree as a junior. In two seasons with the Seahawks, he was 17-11 with a 2.63 ERA.

Eight Seahawks in Coastal Plains League
The Seahawks are well represented in the Coastal Plains League, one of the top collegiate summer leagues. Pitchers Chris Coughlin, Blake Cross and infielders Matt Poulk and Matt Wright will be with the hometown Wilmington Sharks. The Fayetteville Swampdogs, in their second season, include pitchers Brad Overton and Jeff Moore and infielder Russ Simmerman. Rounding out the Seahawks contingent is Ronald Hill, who is with the Wilson Tobs. The Tobs were coached by current UNCW pitching coach Brandon Hall the last two summers.
