Lectures
Nan Graham, English, will present “Cud’n Lizzie Borden” at 10 a.m. May 28 at the CP&L Center in Southport. She will sign copies of her book Turn South at the Next Magnolia from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Southport Community Center.

Performances
No major performances are scheduled on campus during the coming month.

Exhibits
Randall Library is hosting the exhibit “UNCW Student Creations 2002” through Aug. 4 at the library’s first-floor art wall and entrance. The display features artwork by students in Ann Conner’s advanced painting and drawing classes and Aaron Wilcox’s advanced sculpture class.

UNCW Alumni Association - We encourage all men and women who attended or graduated from Wilmington College and/or the University of North Carolina at Wilmington between 1946 and the present time to become involved. Active status requires a contribution of $25 or more to the UNCW Alumni Association each fiscal year (between July 1-June 30). Your contribution supports the many programs provided to alumni and students. Spring 2002 graduates can become active in the association for half-price with a $12.50 contribution. During Senior Salute in March 235 graduating seniors signed up.

Admissions - UNCW is one of the South’s best undergraduate teaching institution as evidenced by a high demand from talented students to be admitted (7,300 applications for 1,650 freshmen slots for fall semester 2002), national recognition, and growth in regionally relevant programs such as gerontology, public administration and film studies.

Wilmington College 1946-60 reunion – June 15
Seahawk Mascot - Wilmington College Reunion Wilmington College classmates from 1946-1960, along with former faculty, will gather for a reunion on June 15 at the Hanover Seaside Club on Wrightsville Beach. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a social followed by a buffet dinner at 7 p.m. The attire is casual. Music will be provided by D.J. Lee Pearson ’70. The cost is $25 per person. For more information or to make reservations, which are due by June 7, please call 800.596.2880 or 910.962.2682. Participation is limited to the first 100 people who register by the deadline. Nominations sought for new Distinguished Faculty Award
The UNCW Alumni Association Past Chairs’ Council is seeking nominations for the Distinguished Faculty Award that will be presented at convocation in August. The deadline for nominations, which may be submitted by UNCW faculty or staff, alumni, students or community members, is July 15. Use Adobe Acrobat Reader to download a copy of the nomination form.

2002 Watson School of Education Distinguished Alumnus named
Amy Brown Salter ’82 will be recognized with the Watson School of Education Kelmarie StaplesDistinguished Alumnus Award at the WSE graduation on May 18. Amy, a fifth grade teacher at Arthur W. Edwards Elementary School in Havelock, is the developer of the Little River Keeper’s Project, was featured in Time Magazine for Kids and Trailblazer Magazine and was inducted into the Neuse River Foundation Hall of Fame for contributing to environmental education programs for children. At the Watson School of Education faculty picnic on May 2, alumni chapter president Diane Evers ’81 presented scholarships to Shannon Hills of Wilmington and Kelmarie K. Staples of Jacksonville.

Communication Studies Department recognizes alumni
At its senior banquet, the Communication Studies Department Kara Hayesrecognized two outstanding alumni. Faculty member Dave Bollinger ‘96 presented Cara Hayes ‘97 with the Communication Studies Alumnus of the Frank Trimble and Ray CockrellYear Award. Department Chair Frank Trimble awarded Ray Cockrell ‘88, ’96M a plaque for his work with communication studies interns in the UNCW Admissions office. Jerri Raquel Morehead, a senior scheduled to graduate in December 2002, will receive, for the second year in a row, the Betty Jo Welch Communication Studies Alumni Scholarship. This is the third year the scholarship has been awarded.

$50,000 gift benefits Wise Alumni House
Wise Alumni House
The university received a $50,000 gift from the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust at the suggestion of Mary L. F. Wiley, the granddaughter of the late Jessie Kenan Wise. The money will be used to continue the periodic maintenance and repair of Wise Alumni House. Learn MORE about Wise Alumni House.

Bookstore discount available for limited time
UNCW alumni with current membership cards can receive a 10 percent discount on non-sale items purchased at the UNCW bookstore up to the expiration date on the back of their cards. The card must be presented at time of purchase.

Summer institute for lifelong learners
UNC Wilmington, through its Division for Public Service and Continuing Studies, is offering the Summer Institute for Lifelong Learners May 13 through July 19. It features five week-long, academically based, noncredit adult sessions and offers Continuing Education Units as professional development credit. Topics include science, literature, the Middle East, Southern history and culture and world religions. MORE

UNCW gets first Ph.D.; doctoral program in marine biology
to accept students in the fall
The UNC Board of Governors on May 10 authorized UNCW to grant a Ph.D. in marine biology, the only such degree in the state and one of only two on the East Coast. This is the first doctorate to be authorized for UNCW although a cooperative Ph.D. in marine science has been offered with NC State University since 1990. The program is expected to accept students for fall semester 2002. MORE

1,176 undergrads, 135 grads receive diplomas in May 18 ceremony;
honorary doctorate goes to musician Percy Heath
UNCW will award 1,176 baccalaureate degrees and 135 graduate degrees on Saturday, May 18, in Trask Coliseum. The first ceremony at 9:30 a.m. will be for 474 undergraduates and 77 master’s degree candidates of the Cameron School of Business, Watson School of Education and the School of Nursing. The 1:30 p.m. ceremony will be for 702 undergraduates and 58 master’s degree candidates in the College of Arts and Sciences. During the afternoon ceremony, Wilmington native jazz legend Percy Heath will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts Degree. MORE

Senior class raising money for 9/11 memorial
The 2002 UNCW senior class is raising money to continue the tradition of presenting the university with a gift. This year, it will be a monument in memory of the tragedy of Sept. 11. MORE

Summer writing workshop for high school students
The UNCW Creative Writing Department will hold its first Young Writers’ Workshop June 25–28. It will be four days of intensive writing, study and interaction with the UNCW Creative Writing faculty, graduate students and guest authors. The program is geared to rising 10th through 12th grade students, and the registration deadline is May 31. MORE

Political Science Department conference looks at area’s quality of life
Southeastern North Carolina consists of eight counties with a population of 621,138 people. Much talk focuses on preserving the “quality of life” that brings people here or keeps them here, but what is actually meant by the words “quality of life.” How do we know if “quality of life” is improving, going down, or staying the same? On Friday, May 17, the Political Science Department will convene community leaders, policy makers, media and political science scholars and researchers to define and benchmark “quality of life” indicators. The public is invited to attend. MORE

Progress Energy, seven others receive UNCW Razor Walker Award
for contributions to state youth
Progress Energy Inc. and seven extraordinary people were honored by the Watson School of Education with the 2002 Razor Walker Award. Established in 1993, the award is recognized as one of the state’s most prestigious and unique service awards. It is presented annually to a select group of individuals and a corporation who have, through commitment and tenacity, made a significant impact on the lives and the education of children in North Carolina. UNCW gets high marks in IOPL survey
UNCW received high marks for serving New Hanover County Citizens in a survey by the Institute of Political Leadership. Eighty-one percent of respondents said UNCW is doing a good or excellent job serving the county. Virtually the same percentage lauded the university’s efforts at providing educational opportunities for residents. MORE

UNCW’s home page has been redesigned. This new look resulted from efforts by the World Wide Web Committee that includes representatives from offices and departments campuswide.

Educator’s resource Web site on smart growth now online
UNCW and John T. Hoggard High School teamed up to develop an educational Web site that is a supplement to UNCW’s award-winning television documentary Paving the American Dream: Southern Cities Shores & Sprawl. MORE

break ground for Bolton Health Center

The center is a partnership among the Towns of Bolton and Sandyfield, the Waccamaw-Siouan Tribal Council and the UNCW School of Nursing to improve the quality of life of residents in this rural area. MORE

UNCW senior wins Fulbright Scholarship to Norway
Mark C. Kelly of Pineville, La., a senior marine biology and psychology double major at UNCW, received a Fulbright Scholarship to Norway. MORE

Endowed lecture series named for Shermans
Thanks to the generosity of Phillip D. Sherman Andes wife, Birgitta L. Sherman, and their daughter, Ann Sherman-Skiba and husband Dr. Gunther Skiba, UNCW has created an endowed annual lecture series entitled the Virginia and Derrick Sherman Emerging Scholars Lecture Series. MORE

Moore named director of General College
Kemille Moore, chair of the Department of Art and Theatre, will take over as director of the General College, effective July 1. Moore, who joined UNCW in 1991, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Arizona State University and a doctorate from the University of Washington. She was named department chair in 1998.

Brad Brownell named UNCW's sixth men's basketball coach
Coach Brad Brownell
After working alongside Jerry Wainwright for eight seasons, associate head coach Brad Brownell was introduced as the sixth head coach in UNC Wilmington's hoops history at a press conference April 24. A native of Evansville, Ind., Brownell takes over following the sudden resignation of Wainwright. MORE

Donlon named to UNCW coaching staff
Former UNC Wilmington point guard and all-time assist leader Billy Donlon has returned to his alma mater as an assistant men’s basketball coach. MORE

Gee Joins NCAA Rush In Men's Golf
UNC Wilmington’s foray into post-season competition in 2001-02 continued last week when Adam Gee earned a berth to play in NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships. Gee, a junior from Surrey, England, was selected to participate as an individual in the East Regional at Ansley Golf Club in Roswell, Ga. He becomes the first Seahawk to take part in the men’s nationals. MORE

Men claim sixth CAA crown; women finish third
You can call them six-time CAA track and field champions after UNC Wilmington's men's team successfully defended its title at the CAA Track and Field Championships at Sports Backer Stadium in Richmond, Va. The Seahawks defeated second-place William and Mary by 10.5 points, while the women's team finished third behind William and Mary and George Mason. MORE

UNC Wilmington women capture Big South golf title
The Lady Seahawks finished with an eight-stroke victory over Coastal Carolina after a final round 303 to win the Big South Golf title. It was the first championship for UNCW (296-299-303=898), an associate member of the conference in women's golf, breaking a three-year run by Charleston Southern. They competed in the NCAA Women's Golf Championships Central Regional May 9-11, finishing 18th in the 54-hole event in East Lansing, Mich. MORE

UNCW-VCU baseball series Thursday-Saturday
UNCW's three-game baseball series with Virginia Commonwealth at Brooks Field has been moved up a day and will start at 7 p.m. May 16. The Seahawks and Rams meet again in the season-ending series 7 p.m. May 17 and wrap up the three-game set at 4 p.m. May 18.
