1960s reunion party postponed
The Wilmington College reunion party scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday,
October 19, 2002, at Bob King's truck center has been postponed
until spring. However, other reunion events will continue as planned:
8-9:30 a.m. - Drop-in breakfast and tour at Wise Alumni House; 10
a.m. - Walking tour of campus; noon - Lunch and learn session with
UNCW professor and author Philip Gerard at Center Stage Cafe'; 2

The Seahawks NFL adventure Sixty
alumni from the Triangle and Wilmington areas will board the Seahawk

Alumnus receives Fulbright
Award Even
before Sept. 11, 2001, the U.S./Middle East divide interested Durham
native Evian Patterson. As a recipient of a prestigious Fulbright
grant, the 2002 UNCW graduate will study firsthand the cultural
and religious distinctions between these two regions. MORE
Nominations open for annual
alumni awards
Nominations are open for the UNCW Alumnus/Alumna of the Year and
Distinguished Citizen awards. The deadline is Nov. 30. Nominations
can be made by writing a letter of recommendation to the UNCW Alumni
Association Board of Directors. Please specify the award category
and describe why you think the nominee merits the award. Include
the nominees name, address, daytime telephone number and work
place. Mail to Patricia Smith, UNCW alumni relations executive director,
Wise Alumni House, 1713 Market Street, Wilmington, N.C. 28403. Additional

Gale leads Young Alumni
Council
Tom Gale '98 was elected president of the UNCW Young Alumni Council.
Kristen Kilpatrick '93 is vice president, and Shanda Bordeaux '92
is secretary. Committee chairs are Mike Young '92, careers and admissions;
Kate Tillman '98; programming and awards; and Elizabeth Fugate-Whitlock
'00, technology.
Local Seahawks socialize
Buffalo Wild Wings is the setting for the Cape Fear Alumni social
at 6 p.m. Nov. 6. It will be a great opportunity for Seahawk socializing

Board member spotlight This
years "Rookie of the Year," Mark Tyler 87
took the lead as a first-year board member to become involved with
three of five board committees and supported the efforts of the
association by participating in numerous alumni functions. His input
assisted the board and association in achieving success in friend-
and fund-raising. Mark has a bachelors degree in management
from Cameron School of Business and has been with the Bank of Wilmington
for three years as vice president and commercial lender. He has
been in banking for 15 years and uses his UNCW degree on a daily
basis. Mark is married to Leslie, and they have two children, Carrie,
13, and Jackson, 6. The family enjoys the beach and health and fitness
activities. Special thanks to Mark, one of our Grand Alumni Champions!

Lecture spotlights U.S., Arab world and Palestine
The inaugural Sherman Emerging Scholar Lecture will feature Near
Eastern scholar Michael Doran at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24, in Dobo Hall,
Room 134. Assistant professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton
University and adjunct senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations
in New York City, Doran will speak on "The United States, the
Arab World and the Question of Palestine." MORE
Black addresses rise of
Republicans Nationally
known political scientist Merle Black will speak on The Rise
of Southern Republicans and the Election of Nov. 5, 2002 at
7:30 p.m. Oct. 25, in Cameron Hall Auditorium. Responding to his
presentation will be UNC Chapel Hill state government expert Thad
Beyle and 18th District Cumberland County Representative Mia Morris,
a Republican and graduate of the UNCW Institute of Political Leadership.
Lee Johnston, professor of political science at UNC Wilmington and
organizer of the event, will moderate. MORE

UNCW will get double the dollars in a pilot partnership formed with
Harris Teeter. MORE
Technology transfer agreement
signed with aaiPharma
UNCW signed its first-ever technology transfer licensing agreement
with aaiPharma Inc, in September. This agreement is expected to
facilitate the transfer of scientific discoveries by university
researchers into future useful medicines. MORE
Edgerton
is UNCWs newest professor
Author Clyde Edgerton was appointed tenured professor in the Creative
Writing Department. He will teach year-round in both the Master
of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts programs while continuing
his role as a thesis supervisor for graduate students. MORE
UNCW unveils 11-county electronic
community resource
A new and unique database hosted by www.SpinNC.org is the most comprehensive
location where citizens of Southeastern North Carolina can go to
access information on area services and resources. MORE
African-American history
focus of Heritage School
Heritage School, a five-week opportunity to learn African-American
history, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 19
through Nov. 16. The sessions are free but advance registration

Two-day course explores
historical Jesus
Bart Ehrman, UNC professor of religion and a leading researcher
and writer on Jesus, will lead a two-day course, Quest for
Historical Jesus, part of UNCWs Lifelong Learning Institute
Fall Weekends. Times are 6:30 to 9 p.m. Nov. 1 and 9:30 a.m. to
1 p.m. Nov. 2. The cost is $79 and includes refreshments and lunch

Former UNCW professor UN
Day lunch speaker
Ronald Copley, former UNCW professor of finance, will present The
Current Status of Jordan at the U.N. Day lunch, 1 p.m. Oct.
20 in Wagoner Hall, Madeline Suite. Copley was a financial consultant
with the government of Jordan. Cost of the lunch, sponsored by the
Coastal Carolina Chapter of the United Nations Association, is $11.

College Days for lifelong
learners in November
UNCW will host College Day, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday,
Nov. 23, featuring 30 one-hour, non-credit classes for
lifelong learners. The cost is $10 a person for four classes and
includes lunch. Registration deadline is Nov. 15. For more information,

UNCW athletes pace system
in graduation rates
UNC Wilmington posted the highest graduation rate for its student-athletes
among NCAA Division I public universities in North Carolina for
the four-year class average, according to the annual graduation
rates report recently released by the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA). UNCW paced the UNC system in four-year class
averages at 74 percent, followed by UNC Asheville at 67 percent
and UNC Greensboro at 53 percent. MORE
Practice began Saturday
for hoops teams
The sound of bouncing basketballs returned to Trask Coliseum Saturday
when the UNCW men's and women's teams opened fall practice in preparation
for the 2002-03 campaign.

Seahawks host River Landing
Intercollegiate
UNCW is hosting 13 teams in the 2002 River Landing Intercollegiate
Mens Golf Tournament that continues through Tuesday. The 54-hole
event at River Landing Golf Club in Wallace featured 36 holes Monday,
followed by 18 holes Tuesday. MORE
Midnite Madness begins Wednesday,
Oct. 16
Kick off Midnite Madness at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when Seahawk fans
have a tailgate party before the mens soccer team takes on
UNC at 7. Other activities are planned the rest of the week leading
up to the Midnite Fan Jam at 9 p.m. at the Hanover Hall parking
lot, featuring To the Nines, SURF 107.5, free food, sumo bellies,
inflatable obstacle course, and more. The doors of Trask Coliseum
open at 10:30, and the real madness will begin at 11 p.m. MORE
Landfall Tradition
debuts Nov. 1-3
The Landfall Tradition, a three-day tournament featuring
24 of the nations finest collegiate golf teams, makes its
debut Nov. 1-3 at the Country Club of Landfalls Pete Dye Course.
The 54-hole event, hosted by UNCW, will feature 18 holes each day
by 12 mens teams and 12 womens teams. A practice round
will be held Oct. 31, and the tournament gets under way at 7:30
a.m. Nov. 1. MORE

Spiritual Masters series highlights some of historys
greatest religious role models: Baal Shem Tov, Oct. 22 at Bnai
Israel Synagogue; Prophet Mohammad, Nov. 5 at St. James Episcopal

author and professor of law at Pace University, will speak on Our

UNCW Alumni
Association - We encourage all men and women who attended or
graduated from Wilmington College and/or the University of North
Carolina at Wilmington between 1946 and 2002 to become involved.
Active status requires a contribution of $25 or more to the UNCW
Alumni Association each fiscal year (between July 1-June 30). Your
contribution supports the many programs provided to alumni and students.
Admissions
- UNCW is one of the Souths best undergraduate teaching institutions
as evidenced by a high demand from talented students to be admitted,
national recognition, and growth in regionally relevant programs
such as gerontology, public administration and film studies.
Lifelong
Learning - The UNCW Division for Public Service and Continuing
Studies offers a variety of classes and programs for all interests
and ages, on campus, around town and via the WWW.
Ways
to support UNCW - As state funds are cut, public universities
like UNCW are increasingly seeking private funds to support academic
and athletic programs. There are many ways your contribution can
