PORTERFIELD RECEIVES INAUGURAL
J. MARSHALL CREWS
DISTINGUISHED FACULTY AWARD An
extraordinary leader who brings out the best in her students,
Rebecca Porterfield, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs
and Cameron School of Business professor, was named the inaugural
recipient of the J. Marshall Crews Distinguished Faculty Award.
This new award, created by the Past Chairs Council of the
UNCW Alumni Association, was announced at the fall faculty meeting.

REUNION PLANNED FOR WILMINGTON
COLLEGE 1960-69 GRADUATES
Bob King 66 will host the reunion party beginning at 6 p.m.
Oct. 19 at his truck center on New Centre Drive. The evening kicks
off with a social hour, followed by a buffet dinner and dancing
to the music of The School Boys. The cost is $40 a person and includes
a special reunion gift. A number of additional events are planned
throughout day. RSVPs are due Oct. 15 and can be made online

GOLDEN PLUS FIVE = 55 GRAND
YEARS
At 4 p.m. on Sept. 4, 1947, the doors of Wilmington College opened
to 238 eager students. In recognition of this occasion, we are asking
alumni to make a 55th birthday gift to UNCW. A gift of $55 or more
will assist us in ensuring that the doors will always be open to
improving the educational experience of our students. Join us in

ALUMNI EVENTS PLANNED FOR
FALL NFL ADVENTURE Triangle and Charlotte chapters are sponsoring
the Carolina Panthers NFL Adventure Oct. 27. Cost is $65 per person,
includes a round-trip Amtrak ticket from Raleigh to Charlotte, pregame
tailgate party, game pass for Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
LUNCH AND LEARN EXPERIENCE
The nursing chapter hosts a presentation by Dean Virginia
Adams at noon Sept. 18 in the AHEC Auditorium at New Hanover Regional
Medical Center. Her topic is Century 21 Nursing Education

YOUNG ALUMNI
The Young Alumni Council will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at Wise Alumni
House. The council, whose members represent graduates from the last
decade, needs representatives from 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996
and 2001.
RIVERFEST
Visit alumni staff and volunteers at the UNCW Alumni Association
booth Oct. 5-6 on the corner of Water and Princess streets. You
can get free alumni stuff.
LEADERS NEEDED
Local alumni interested in planning events and programs for
the Cape Fear Chapter are invited to meet at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 25
at Wise Alumni House.
GOLF CLASSIC PROCEEDS BENEFIT
MANY
Proceeds from the ninth annual Cape Fear Alumni Golf Classic benefited
four UNCW scholarship fund-raising efforts. Checks for $500 (totaling
$2,000) were given to the Brian King Communication Studies Scholarship,
the Shirley Gilbert Farr Scholarship, the Wilmington College Endowed
Scholarship and the Doug Johnson Scholarship effort.
WISE ALUMNI HOUSE BENEFACTOR
PASSES AWAY
Wise Alumni House benefactor Janet Patton Lewis, 82, died Aug. 29
in Richmond, Va. She and her late husband, Lawrence, grandson of
Jessie Hargrave Kenan Wise, and his sister, Mary Lily Flagler Lewis
Wiley deeded Wise House to UNCW in 1968 to further the universitys
charitable and educational programs. MORE
BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Gia Todd Long 86 is one of the associations valuable
veteran board members who was a catalyst in the growth
of the African American Graduates Association. A board member since
1991, Gia has worked for UNCW in the telecommunications department
since she graduated and is currently administrative services manager.
She has a degree in environmental studies and is enrolled in the
Master of Public Administration Program. She is the wife of Mike
Long and the mother of two: Shelby, 3, and Michael, 8 months. Always
open to opportunities to grow, Gia is participating in Leadership
Wilmington to enhance her knowledge of the community. Seahawk salute
to Gia for her volunteerism!
THESE ALUMNI ARE “GRAND”
The ranks of UNCWs Grand Alumni Champions have grown each
year since the programs inception in 2000. Last year 14 alumni
and friends attained that special recognition by contributing $1,000
to the alumni association. MORE
UNCW MAINTAINS TOP 10 RANKING
UNC Wilmington has retained its place among the top 10 public universities
in the South in the latest college rankings developed by U. S. News
& World Report. Among the public universities in the South,
UNCW is ranked seventh behind James Madison University, The Citadel,
Appalachian State University, College of Charleston, Murray State
University and UNC Charlotte. A complete report of the rankings

COMMUNITY INPUT SOUGHT
BY CHANCELLOR SEARCH COMMITTEE
Two public forums are scheduled to obtain community input in the
selection process for a new chancellor at UNCW. The forums are scheduled
for noon to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 23 in the Warwick Center
Ballroom. MORE
The search committee will meet from 10:30 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. Sept 16 in Wagoner Hall, Madeline Suite, to discuss administrative
support for the search, general recruitment strategies and the process
to develop search criteria. This meeting is also open to the public.

FACULTY AND STAFF ARE RECOGNIZED
FOR ACHIEVEMENTS
Winners of 2002 Distinguished Teaching Professorships, Timothy Ballard,
associate professor of biological sciences; Joanne Rockness, professor
of accountancy and business law; and Brad Walker, associate professor
of curricular studies, were honored for outstanding contributions
to UNCWs instructional program. Walker also received the UNCW
Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence Award.

UNCW MOURNS DEATH OF OWEN
KENAN
Owen G. Kenan, 58, business leader, philanthropist and UNCW trustee,
died Sept. 2. A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, Kenan was president
of the Chapel Hill-based Kenan Enterprises and vice chair of the
board of directors of Flagler Systems Inc., a family-owned business
that operates real estate properties in Palm Beach, Fla. He also
attended UNCW in 1967. The Kenan family has a long history of supporting
education at campuses across the state.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Construction is underway on the 82,000-square-foot school of education
building; the 62,500-square-foot, 263-bed residence hall; and a
parking lot at the intersection of Price Drive and Riegel Road.

ENVIRONMENTAL MINUTE ON
WECT-TV 6
The UNCW Center for Marine Science and WECT-TV6, Wilmingtons
NBC affiliate television station, are teaming up to offer the Environmental
Minute, every Monday during the Carolina in the Morning
show. Narrating and hosting the Environmental Minute is 13-year
old environmentalist Kaitlin Baden, a 9th grade student at Hoggard

GOLF TOURNAMENT PROCEEDS
BENEFIT SCHOLARSHIPS
The Got-Em-On Live Bait Clubs fifth annual scholarship golf
tournament will be held Sept. 28 at The Cape. Check-in is at 11
a.m. with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Proceeds from this tournament
will fund scholarships for marine science graduate students. For

INKS PRO PACT WITH THAMES VALLEY TIGERS
Former UNCW men's basketball standout Ed Williams has signed a professional
contract to play for the Thames Valley Tigers in the new British

The UNCW men's golf team finished fourth while junior Derek Brown
earned a tie for second place at the Badger Invitational in Madison,

GOLF CLASSIC
UNC Wilmington saved its best for last, shooting a tournament-record
295 on the final day, to successfully defend its title in the Unlimited
Potential/Bay Tree Womens Golf Classic at Bay Tree Golf Plantation.

KING MACKEREL TOURNAMENT
BENEFITS SEAHAWK CLUB
The 21st Annual Wrightsville Beach King Mackerel Tournament is set
for Sept. 20-21, with registration from noon to 10 p.m. Sept. 19.
Proceeds for the tournament benefit the Seahawk

Rita Colwell, director of the National Science Foundation, will
kick off the UNCW Center for Marine Science 2002-03 Planet
Ocean Seminar Series. Her topic will be Oceans, Climate
and Health: The Cholera Paradigm. She will speak at 6 p.m.

professor and author David Wright will read from his works at 8
p.m. Sept. 19 in Morton Hall, Bryan Auditorium. A reception and
book signing will follow. Wright is the author of Fire on the Beach:

Jeff Goodwin, an F/X make-up artist who has worked
on numerous major motion pictures including David Lynchs Blue
Velvet and Michael Manns The Last of the Mohicans, will speak
from 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 20 in Bryan Auditorium, Morton Hall. Goodwin,
author of the book, Transformations Simple Makeup Effects,
is the recipient of the British Academy Award and in 1993 received
the International Society of Makeup Artists Lifetime Achievement
Award.
The 2002-03 Leadership Lecture Series Constructing
Conscience: A Matter of Values will explore themes of values,
integrity and self-awareness in contemporary society. MORE

UNCW
Alumni Association - We encourage all men and women who attended
or graduated from Wilmington College and/or the University of North
Carolina at Wilmington between 1946 and the present time to become
involved. Active status requires a contribution of $25 or more to
the UNCW Alumni Association each fiscal year (between July 1-June
30). Your contribution supports the many programs provided to alumni
and students. Spring 2002 graduates can become active in the association
for half-price with a $12.50 contribution. During Senior Salute
in March 235 graduating seniors signed up.
Admissions
- UNCW is one of the Souths best undergraduate teaching institution
as evidenced by a high demand from talented students to be admitted
(7,300 applications for 1,650 freshmen slots for fall semester 2002),
national recognition, and growth in regionally relevant programs
such as gerontology, public administration and film studies.

like UNCW are increasingly seeking private funds to support academic
