I. Alumni News

A. Become an active alumnus
We encourage all men and women who attended or graduated from Wilmington College and/or the University of North Carolina at Wilmington between 1946 and 2003 to become involved. Active status requires a contribution of $25 or more to UNCW each fiscal year (between July 1-June 30). Your contribution supports the many programs provided to alumni and students.

B. Homecoming 2004 scheduled
Saturday, Jan. 24, has been set as the date for 2004 homecoming celebration. The men’s basketball game in which the Seahawks will play Delaware will be televised. Game time has not been confirmed.

C. Board member spotlight
The UNCW Alumni Association spotlights Trudy Maus ’91, ’97M, Trudy works for Banner Direct, Inc.,a marketing agency,  as their Creative and Production Director. She is married to Marc Maus, who is self-employed, and is well-versed in landscaping and making fishing lures. Trudy serves on the boards Alumni Development Committee and also on the Cameron School of Business Alumni Chapter ExecutiveCommittee ,as secretary. For fun, She enjoys crafts, decorating, reading and boating. With her husband, Marc, she really put those fishing lures to work and both seem to have a lot of skill and luck with their “catch”. We welcome, Trudy to our board and look forward to her dynamic leadership.

D. Chapter/Council news

II. Campus News

A. UNCW lays down the welcome mat for over 1,700 freshmen
Beginning with Move-In on Saturday, Aug. 16, UNCW is planning a week of activities that includes the Beach Blast, Concert on the Commons and fireworks. Classes start on Wednesday, Aug. 20.

B. Economists forecast local economy to grow 5 percent
Economic activity in the three counties of Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender in Southeastern North Carolina is forecast to grow 5 percent to around $7 billion over the next year, according to a forecast released by UNC Wilmington economists Claude Farrell and William W. Hall Jr.

C. Bronze seahawk stolen; recovered next day
The bronze statue of UNCW’s mascot, the seahawk, at the entrance to Warwick Center, was stolen sometime between 5:30 p.m. July 21 and 8:30 a.m. July 22. The statue, which was mounted on a granite base, was broken off near the bird’s talons.

The seahawk was returned to campus on July 23 thanks to an observant WECT-TV 6 photographer who saw it on the steps of her apartment complex. A $250 reward was offered for information identifying the vandal.

D. UNCW, Harris Teeter – Together in Education
The Harris Teeter grocery store chain is continuing its partnership with UNCW as part of its’ “Together in Education” program. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, grandparents and friends can link their Harris Teeter VIC cards to the program by giving the cashier the UNCW account code – 5034 – and two percent of their store brand or private label purchases will be credited to UNCW. The funds provided by this partnership will be used to enrich campus life for UNCW students.

E. Upcoming golf tournaments
The Got-Em-On Live Bait Club will host its sixth annual scholarship golf tournament Sept. 27 at the Cape Golf and Racquet Club. All proceeds will fund scholarships for UNCW marine science graduate students. The format will be captain’s choice, handicapped and flighted. Teams or singles should be at the Cape at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12:30. Registration is $55 for men and $45 for women. The UNCW Department of Health and Applied Human Sciences is hosting the eighth annual Earl Allen Memorial Golf Tournament at noon Sept. 5 at Olde Point Golf Course in Hampstead. The field will consist of the first 30 teams of four to register. The entry fee is $75 per player, which includes cart and greens fees, range balls, two mulligans, lunch, dinner and soft drinks and water. For more information, contact Phoebe Moore 910.962.4268.

III. Seahawk Sports

A. Alumni assume coaching positions
Former Seahawk women's tennis player Elizabeth Perry was named assistant coach for the Auburn University women's tennis program. Perry lettered for the Seahawks from 1997-01 before moving onto the University of Idaho as a graduate assistant. She then served as a volunteer assistant for the Lady Tar Heels at UNC Chapel Hill.

Former Seahawk swimming standout Leigh Tysinger Abraham is returning to her alma mater as an assistant coach. Abraham served as a student assistant coach during the 1999-2000 season. She was a member of the UNCW women’s team from 1998 to 1999 and helped the Seahawks capture back-to-back CAA championships and remains among the career leaders in three events.

B. Scalf earns ABCA/Diamond Coach of the Year Award
UNC Wilmington head baseball coach Mark Scalf was named East Regional Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Diamond Sports Company.

C. Sprecher assumes head coach responsibilities
UNC Wilmington cross country/track and field coach Kevin Ankrom has stepped down to pursue international coaching opportunities and former skipper Jim Sprecher will return to head the program.

D. Fishing tournament benefits Seahawk Club
The 22nd Annual Wrightsville Beach King Mackerel Tournament will be held Sept. 18-20. For tournament information or for early registration, log onto http://www.wbkmt.com. Proceeds from this fishing tournament benefit the Seahawk Club. UNCW student-athletes will be volunteering their time to help out with this tournament.

E. Seahawk Club outing
The kick-off for the Seahawk Club annual fundraising campaign is 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at Jungle Rapids. Tickets are $15 for adults and $6 for children under 5 and include dinner and unlimited use of the Water Park and Kids Jungle. For advance tickets, call 910.962.3571.

F. Hall of fame nominees needed
Nominations are sought for the fifth induction of the UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame, which will take place early in 2004. The hall of fame is designed to honor former student-athletes, coaches and administrators.The deadline for nominations is Sept. 15.
