New officers at helm of association board
Ray Cockrell ’88, ’96M is serving his second term as chair of the UNCW Alumni Association. Also returning for second terms are Ed Vosnock ’71 as vice chair and Donis Noe Smith ’86, ’94M as treasurer. New to the executive board is Morgan Harris McKoy ’99 as secretary. Board members re-elected to serve three-year terms are Jason Wheeler ’99, Jenean Todd, Jennifer Adams ’00, Melissa Blackburn-Walton ’87, Mark Tyler ’87 and Nadine Batuyios ’73. Jeff Mann ’92 is new to the board. Patrick Gunn ’00 is returning as an alternate board member, serving a one-year term. New members are Robert Rideout ’95, Jeff Mann ’92, James E. Jones Jr. ’88, Trudy Maus ’91, Audrey Porter ’88, Gayle Hayes Lofton ’89 and Robert Warren ’79.

Board meets Aug. 2
The UNCW Alumni Association Board of Directors will meet Aug. 2 to kick off the association’s new year and to welcome the university’s new chancellor, Dr. Rosemary DePaolo. The meeting will be held at Wise Alumni House starting with a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. followed by the board meeting at 9 a.m.

Board member spotlight
The spotlight shines on Jeff Mann ’92, one of the newest alumni board members. Jeff works for Amtrak in Raleigh as director of route profitability. He received his bachelor’s degree in business management from UNCW and his Master of Business Administration from Wake Forest University in 1995. Jeff has actively served on the Young Alumni Council since its inception in 2001. He has been instrumental in creating unique events for alumni in the Triangle area through his transit authority contacts. Jeff is married to Sue, a delightful young woman who gives him tremendous support with his community and outreach efforts. Jeff brings strength to the alumni board with his application of financial and project management skills. Thanks to Jeff for his volunteerism to UNCW and its 38,000 alumni.

Chancellor DePaolo begins tenure at UNCW
Rosemary DePaolo, the third chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, began her new position on July 1. Faculty and staff greeted her at a breakfast on July 14, her first official day on the job. MORE

Congressman Mike McIntyre (D-N.C. 7th District) introduced a Sense of the U.S. House Resolution to strengthen and promote the national policy on aquaculture. MORE

Volunteers needed to help freshmen “Move-In”
UNCW’s freshman Move-In 2003 will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 16. All volunteers will receive a Move-In 2003 T-shirt, breakfast and lunch. They are asked to check-in at Wagoner Dining Hall beginning at 6:15 a.m. to receive their assignments; breakfast will be served until 7 a.m. Volunteers will need to be in place by 7:30 a.m. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to call 910.962.3119 by July 30.

Leutze chairs spy conference
UNCW Chancellor Emeritus James R. Leutze will serve as chairman of the inaugural Raleigh International Spy Conference, titled “Spies, Lies & Treason: The KGB in America.” The two-day event will take place Aug. 27-29 at the N.C. Museum of History. MORE

Burt named assistant vice chancellor
Raymond Burt, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of German in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, assumed the position of assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs in the Office of the Provost. MORE

Pawlik gets NSF appointment
UNCW biology professor Joseph Pawlik was awarded a two-year appointment with the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. MORE

International Program seeks hosts
The Office of International Programs needs hosts to help international students acclimate to their Wilmington surroundings. Almost 90 new students, who will live in on-campus housing, are expected in the program this fall. Community members are requested to offer off-campus experiences, such as occasional meals, transportation assistance and an introduction to local sites. Blizzard in forecast for Mediterranean Sea
All-time men's hoops leading scorer Brett Blizzard has agreed to a four-year, $470,000 contract with the Montepaschi club in Siena, Italy. The Tallahassee, Fla., product will join the team in mid-August, competing in the Italian A-league.
