A. Recent alumnus is Fulbright scholar

Kemp Burdette, a May 2003 graduate, received a Fulbright scholarship to study in Canada. He is the ninth UNCW student awarded this prestigious grant.

B. Board member spotlight

The UNCW Alumni Association salutes alumni board member Steve Hobbs ‘76. Steve graduated from UNCW with a bachelor’s degree in history. He and his wife Kayren have three children: a son, Louis, a recent graduate of John T. Hoggard High School, and daughters, Elise and Emily. Steve works for Seaboard Commercial Properties, LLC, in real estate management. He enjoys additional volunteer work with Winter Park Optimist and Wilmington Kiwanis Club. He and his family are members of the Hanover Seaside Club and enjoy the wonders of Wrightsville Beach. Steve served on the alumni board in 1979 when the alumni association was incorporated as a non-profit organization and has been a part of its growth over the years with his volunteerism. For Steve’s involvement and support of our alumni association and UNCW, we say thank you!

D. Chapter News

The Cameron School of Business Alumni Chapter will hold its annual Picnic in the Park from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at Hugh MacRae Park Shelter No. 4. All Cameron School of Business alumni and their families are invited to this free event. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, barbecue and beverages will be served along with all the fixin’s. You will also be able to enjoy the Sounds of Summer Concert series featuring Capt. Cook & the Coconutz. Rain date is Thursday, Aug. 21. Alumni interested in attending must RSVP by Monday, Aug. 11, with the UNCW Alumni Office by calling 962.2682 or 800.596.2880.

The School of Nursing Alumni Chapter is looking for nursing alumni willing to serve on the chapter board. The chapter supports the School of Nursing and provides programs for nursing alumni to keep them connected to the School of Nursing. The chapter supports Nurse’s Week activities in May and the “Lunch and Learn” program in the fall, and is looking for other ways to reach nursing alumni through social, educational and mentoring opportunities. The Young Alumni Council, representing alumni from 1993 to 2003, will have its end-of-the-year social at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at Seapath Yacht Club, Wrightsville Beach. Council members will enjoy barbecue from Jackson’s Big Oak Barbecue and an evening of fun and fellowship. The council will elect 2003-04 officers. The council is currently looking for graduates of the following classes to serve: 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 2003. Anyone interested in serving contact Tom Lamont at 962.2684 or 800.596.2880.

More than 100 Wilmington College alumni gathered at the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher on June 7 to renew friendships, maintain ties to each other and the college that they grew to love and that they have witnessed being transformed into our great university! Wilmington College alumni have raised just under $23,000 of the $25,000 goal towards endowing the alumni scholarship. Bob Dobo ’50 and Bill Dobo ’51 have graciously offered to fund the historical marker for the original site of Wilmington College on 13th and Market Streets. Plans are moving ahead to acquire the marker noting the significance of Wilmington College to the community and the students who attended. Join Wilco alumni at 11:30 a.m. the third Wednesday of each month in the back meeting room of Jackson’s Big Oak for fellowship and lunchtime sharing.

A. DePaolo names Max Allen special assistant to chancellor

Max Allen, executive assistant to the president and director of university relations at Georgia College & State University has accepted the position of special assistant to the chancellor of UNCW, effective mid-July. B. Osprey nest cam

C. School of Nursing gets $570,000 grant for Bolton Center

Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-NC, 7th District) presented the School of Nursing with a $570,000 grant to operate the Bolton Health and Wellness Center. http://appserv01.uncw.edu/news/article.asp?ID=237

D. Link between imagination and learning to be explored

UNCW’s Creative Writing Department will see if imaginative children are better readers and in turn better learners as part of the project “Community Creativity: Closing the Achievement Gap.” http://appserv01.uncw.edu/news/article.asp?ID=55

E. UNCW research helps with clean-ups

Cleaning up contaminated soil and groundwater is estimated to cost trillions of dollars in North America. Research by a UNCW geologist is helping scientists design more effective clean-up schemes. http://appserv01.uncw.edu/news/article.asp?ID=66

F. Summit explores key church issues

Transforming churches, rebuilding trust after sexual scandals, reaching young people, reinvigorating worship – these are just a few of the topics to be addressed at the Pastoral Summit June 17-19 in Indianapolis. G. Nursing school planning first bachelor’s in clinical research

The UNCW School of Nursing plans to establish the UNC system’s first Bachelor of Science in Clinical Research. Wilmington-based PPD Inc. is providing $300,000 to develop the program. http://appserv01.uncw.edu/news/article.asp?ID=74

H. Leutze makes last commencement address

Graduation is a bittersweet time. It signifies an ending and beginning to different stages in life. That was especially true at UNCW, where Chancellor James R. A. Baseball team has NCAA debut

The UNCW baseball team had a successful debut in the NCAA Baseball Regional in Baton Rouge, La. The Seahawks eliminated nationally ranked Tulane (coached by UNCW alumnus Rick Jones) late Saturday and threw a scare into No. 2-rated LSU on Sunday before falling in extra innings.

B. Seahawks tapped in MLB draft

Senior outfielder Jamie Hemingway and senior right-hander Brad Overton, were selected by the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies, respectively, in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft. Senior right-hander Jake Mullis was selected by the Kansas City Royals.

C. UNCW senior finishes 8th at NCAA Regional

Senior Chad Joyner finished eighth in the hammer throw to highlight UNC Wilmington’s finishes in the NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championships in Fairfax, Va. Joyner was one of six Seahawks who competed in the meet, which marked the debut for UNCW in the inaugural event.

D. Seahawk Club fund-raiser

The annual Seahawk Club Golf Challenge is June 23 at River Landing Golf Course in Wallace. Entry fee is $125 per person and includes cart, green fees, range balls, lunch, course beverages and dinner provided by Rucker John’s. Proceeds from both events benefit student-athlete scholarships.
