Seahawks headed to Music City to face Terps
The UNCW men’s basketball team, seeded 11th in the South Region, will face sixth seed Maryland in a first-round matchup of the NCAA Tournament at 9:30 p.m. Friday, March 21, at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville, Tenn.

The Opryland Hotel in Nashville will be Seahawk Fan headquarters. Wilmington fans who can't make it to Nashville can get in on the fun locally beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Alleigh's. The Cape Fear Chapter hosts its fifth annual Grand Slam Jam on Wednesday, April 9, at Brooks Field. The pregame cookout begins at 5:45 p.m. and the UNCW Seahawks play the UNC Tarheels at 7 p.m. The cost of the cookout is $7 for adults, $3.50 for children 6-12 and free for children 5 and under. Game tickets are $2 a person and free for children 14 and under. Reservations can be made by calling 910.962.2682 or 800.596.2880.
B. Former Ambassadors sought
UNCW Student Ambassadors want to hear from all former ambassadors. If you were an ambassador during your years at UNCW, please write to ambassadors@uncwil.edu and let us know what you are up to. If you have contact information for other Ambassador alumni, please include that in your e-mail.
C. Board member spotlight
Livian Jones '95M has actively served on the alumni board since 1997 and was instrumental in the UNCW Alumni Association’s investment success through the hiring of an investment manager and the implementation of investment strategies. Her input was critical to the success of selecting affinity bank partners over the years. She has served as board treasurer and finance committee chair as well as on other committees during her board tenure. Livian has a Master of Business Administration degree from UNCW and is an avid Seahawk fan, purchasing annual season tickets to support the ‘Hawks and contributing to the Seahawk Club. Livian is married to Mike and has one son, Michael, who brings so much joy to their lives. Livian is employed by McKim and Creed and is known as an excellent businesswoman in the community. Generous with her time, talent and dollars, Livian is a tri-athlete on the McKim and Creed team that has raised thousands of dollars for the cure for leukemia. The UNCW Alumni Association salutes Livian for her longtime support of alumni and the university!
D. Chapter News
AAGA members will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at the Olive Garden in Cary (off I-440 south and US-1). The chapter’s new officers will preside. Contact Karen Cheek at 919.718.6639 for more information.
The Young Alumni Council will meet at 2 p.m. March 29 at Wise Alumni House.
Jim Humphries Memorial Scholarship Endowment Golf Tournament is at 1 p.m. April 12 at Echo Farms. The endowment is now at over $28,000. The entry fee of $125 includes a round of golf, shrimp-a-roo for the family, a donation to the effort, and a special gift for the golfer. The 10th annual Cape Fear Alumni Golf Classic will be held April 26 at Echo Farms Golf and Country Club with a 1 p.m. shot-gun start. Cost is $70 per golfer and proceeds benefit scholarships and other projects of the UNCW Cape Fear Alumni Chapter. For more information contact Tom Lamont at lamontt@uncw.edu or 800.596.2880.

The UNCW Chancellor Search Committee submitted its final report to the board of trustees March 10. Following a national search that attracted 135 applications and nominations, the committee recommended three finalists to the trustees who then passed them on to UNC System President Molly Broad. President Broad will nominate one of those individuals for election by the UNC Board of Governors. The finalists’ names are confidential under North Carolina state law and are not subject to public release. It is anticipated that the president's nominee for UNCW’s chancellor will be elected by the board of governors and announced March 21. Check your e-mail on Friday for an official announcement of UNCW’s chancellor-elect.
B. UNCW research programs receive $2+ million in federal funding
The Coastal Ocean Research and Monitoring Program will receive $1.2 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. An additional $860,000 will benefit mariculture research and launch a pilot program on natural disaster mitigation. The appropriations are part of the Omnibus appropriations for fiscal year 2003.

C. Tree relocation underway
Over the next six weeks, 137 trees will be relocated from building sites around campus, including the expanded University Union complex, general classroom building and outlying work zones, to areas not affected by the construction. The cost of the project will be approximately $13,000.

D. Honor a leader with a tree
Individuals interested in honoring a student, faculty/staff member or someone from the community for their leadership on behalf of the university have until April 18 to make a $200 contribution for a tree in the UNCW Leadership Grove. A dedication ceremony will be at 3 p.m. May 1 on the University Commons. For more information, contact Shelly Hoover at 910.962.3877.
E. Wachovia contributes to N.C. Teachers Legacy Hall
Creation of the N.C. Teachers Legacy Hall at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington took a major step forward with a $150,000 contribution from Wachovia.

F. Hartsook endows writing fellowship
National fund-raising consultant Robert F. Hartsook and the Hartsook Companies Inc. have established the Austin Robert Hartsook Fellowship in Creative Writing. Named in honor of Hartsook’s son, the fellowship will support graduate students in the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program with awards of up to $10,000 annually.

G. Board of Governors approves Roer as Graduate School dean
Robert Roer was approved as dean of the UNCW Graduate School at the Feb. 14 meeting of the UNC Board of Governors.

H. Huber named Carnegie Professor of the Year
Richard Huber, a professor of curricular studies in the Watson School of Education, was named the 2002 Carnegie Foundation North Carolina Professor of the Year.

A. Seahawks claim back-to-back CAA tourney wins
Brett Blizzard poured in 20 points, 13 in the second half, as the Seahawks defeated Drexel, 70-62, to win the Colonial Athletic Association's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Blizzard became the first player in CAA history to be named Tournament MVP three times. Tim Burnette and Craig Callahan helped fuel the Seahawks with 16 points apiece as UNCW shot 51.9 percent from the field. Burnette and Callahan were named to the All-Tournament team.

B. Blizzard adds USBW honor to resume
Brett Blizzard was named to the United States Basketball Writers All-District III team. He was the only player outside the Atlantic Coast Conference to be included on the 10-player list.

C. Blizzard, Brownell get top CAA honors
Brett Blizzard was named the CAA men’s basketball Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and became the first player in league history to be named First Team all-conference for four consecutive seasons. First-year coach Brad Brownell was named CAA Coach of the Year after directing the Seahawks to a school regular season record 21 victories.

D. Lady Seahawks fall in CAA quarterfinals
Sixth-seeded Virginia Commonwealth used clutch free throw shooting to knock off third-seeded UNC Wilmington 76-66 in the quarterfinals of the 2003 Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Championship at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

E. Hancock, Lady Seahawks reap CAA awards
Third-year skipper Ann Hancock was named Coach of the Year, junior point guard Cherie Lea earned 1st-team All-CAA honors and senior guard Rachael Friesen-Norwood was tabbed Co-Defensive Player-of-the-Year.

F. Baseball team has CAA opener Friday

March 18 - Irshad Manji will present “Taking Opportunity from
Oppression” at 7:30 p.m. in Cameron Hall Auditorium. She will address ways
that oppression can be used as a tool of individual and community empowerment

- March 25 - Terrill Petri, founder of Women Vision International, will lecture on “Changing the World One Woman at a Time” at 7:30 p.m. in Cameron Hall Auditorium.
- March 31 - “Women in Activism” panel discussion at 7:30 p.m. in the Center Stage Café, Warwick Center. Featured panelist will be Dawn Peebles, cofounder of Objective: Collective, a nonprofit group based in Chapel Hill that promotes collective living.
Douglas N. Rader, senior scientist and manager with the Environmental Defense Fund’s Southeast/Caribbean Oceans Program, will discuss “The Role of Science in Shaping Coastal Policy in the 21st Century” at 7:30 p.m. March 21, in Dobo Hall, Room 103.
Kay Redfield Jamison presents “An Unquiet Mind” at 7 p.m. March 24 in Kenan Auditorium. Tickets are $6.

The short film Conversation with Kafka will premiere at 7 p.m. March 18 in the Warwick Center Ballroom. Directed by Renee Vincent, art and theatre, the film was shot on location in Prague, Czech Republic, and Wilmington. Local Focus, sponsored by the Film Studies Program, will screen short films by local and regional artists as a kickoff for the Cucalorus Film Festival.
