Wilmington College 1946-69 alumni will gather
for their annual reunion at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the N.C.
Aquarium at Fort Fisher. All alumni who ever attended Wilmington
College are invited, as well as retired faculty. Ticket price is
$30 per person for a social hour, informal aquarium tour, full buffet

The Past Chairs’ Council is taking nominations for the J.
Marshall Crews Distinguished Faculty Award until June 15. The award

Sherred
Weidner ’82M began serving the alumni association through
her service with the Watson School of Education Alumni Chapter,
chairing the chapter in 1998 and 1999 and representing it on the
association board of directors. Sherred actively worked with the
development of chapter‘s mentoring program and served on the
distinguished alumnus/a award and nominations committees. She became
a core alumni board member in 2000 where she has been indispensable
in the development, growth, selection and refinement of the association’s
merit scholarship program. Her work with the Student Relations Committee
has been stellar. Sherred has a Master of Education in Elementary
Education from UNCW and certification in middle school education
and special education. She taught for eight years at the high school
level in special education and five years at UNCW as a supervising
teacher for student teachers and instructed student teacher seminars.
Additionally, Sherred worked as a private diagnostic tutor for eight
years. She and Chuck, her husband 41 years, have three children
and eight grandchildren. Her family ranks at the top of the best
ways to spend her time. She also enjoys reading, swimming, biking
and travel. She is a “friend” of many and of our alumni
home, Wise Alumni House, which displays some of her personal treasures
in its rooms. Thanks to Sherred for her service to others.
The African American Graduate Association
and the Office of Campus Diversity will honor African-American seniors
at the annual Senior Sankofa ceremony at 1 p.m. Friday, May 16,
at Wise Alumni House. The ceremony marks the tradition of students
of color graduating from their lives at UNCW to their new careers.
A chapter meeting will follow the festivities at 3:30 p.m. All African-American

The Triangle Chapter
needs alumni to help with its fall fund-raiser; proceeds will benefit
scholarships and chapter programs. Interested alumni are asked to

meeting the week of May 19. Suggestions for possible fund-raisers

The Cameron School of
Business Chapter will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, May
31, at Wise Alumni House. All school of business alumni are invited.
The chapter will announce plans for its annual picnic in August,

The Young Alumni Council
will wrap up the year with a cookout on Saturday, June 14, at Wrightsville
Beach. All council members are invited to come and bring other young

Commencement exercises will be held Saturday, May 17, in Trask Coliseum.
Ceremonies for students in the College of Arts and Sciences will
be at 9:30 a.m.; approximately 842 undergraduate and 130 graduate
students will receive degrees. Ceremonies for the professional schools
(Cameron School of Business, Watson School of Education and the
School of Nursing) will be at 1:30 p.m.; approximately 451 undergraduate
and 78 graduate students will receive degrees. This will be Chancellor
Leutze’s final commencement as chancellor, and he will have
some special remarks for both groups.
Congressman Mike McIntyre (D-NC, 7th District) presented UNCW $860,000
in federal funding to benefit its mariculture research and to launch
a pilot program on natural disaster mitigation. The appropriation,
greatly assisted by the efforts of Rep. McIntyre, is part of the
Omnibus appropriations for fiscal year 2003.

The Georgia Senate honored UNCW chancellor-elect Rosemary DePaolo
with a resolution recognizing her achievements at Georgia College
and State University and congratulated her on being selected chancellor
of UNCW. MORE
Harris Teeter and six individuals who have had a significant impact
on the lives of children in North Carolina received 2003 Razor Walker
Awards. Individual recipients were: District Attorney John E. Carriker;
U.S. Sen. John Edwards; Nathaniel Irvin II, founder of Future Focus
2020 and assistant dean for MBA student development at Wake Forest
University; Tannis Nelson, president of North Carolina Congress
of Parents and Teachers; Constance Parker, founder and executive
director of Wilmington Health Access for Teens; and Dan Strickland,
associate superintendent of Columbus County Schools. MORE

A. McLellan, UNCW research scientist, a 2003 NOAA Environmental

Thirteen UNCW students will receive a Preservation Award of Merit
for their efforts to secure local landmark designations for 13 historic
Wilmington structures. MORE
John Clifford, professor of English, is the national champion of
the 60-yard high hurdles for competitors in the 60 to 64 age bracket.
He won the event at a March 28 meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in
Boston, Mass. Clifford also placed third in the 60-meter dash. MORE

Young Writers’ Workshop for high school students June 24-28.

Monday night was a memorable one at Brooks Field as UNCW's baseball
team captured the American Division title, the No. 2 seed in next
week's CAA Baseball Tournament and tied the school record for victories
with an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over James Madison. MORE
The UNCW men’s golf team was selected Monday to compete in
the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships for the first time in the
history of the program. Fourth-year head coach Grant Robbins and
the Seahawks will participate at the East Regional at Auburn University.
The regional will take place May 15-17 at the Auburn University

The UNCW women's golf team closed out its appearance in the NCAA
East Regional in Winston-Salem with a final round of 305 to finish
17th overall Saturday at Salem Glen Golf Club. MORE
Fred Eshelman, founder and chief executive officer of PPD, Inc.,
is making a significant commitment to UNCW’s Athletic Department
for student-athlete scholarships and renovation of the school’s
strength and conditioning complex in Hanover Hall. MORE
If birds of a feather flock together, then it just makes plain sense
for Linzi Curtis and Katie Mayfield to team up with the Baltimore
Ravens. That’s what has happened for Curtis and Mayfield,
who made the 65-person squad of the Ravens Cheerleaders, the official
spirit squad of the NFL team that won Super Bowl XXXV just three

The Seahawk Club’s third annual Big Boat Cruise and Floating
Auction is May 31 aboard the Henrietta III beginning with a reception
at 6 p.m. at the Wilmington Hilton Riverside followed by the cruise.
Tickets are $50. The annual Seahawk Club Golf Challenge is June
23 at River Landing Golf Course in Wallace. Entry fee is $125 per
person and includes cart, green fees, range balls, lunch, course
beverages and dinner provided by Rucker John’s. Proceeds from
