HELP US MEET THE 10 PERCENT GOAL FOR 2003-04
Increasing alumni support of the university to 10 percent by June 30, 2003, is a goal set by Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo. That translates into a total of 3,718 donors. As of Oct. 31, 841 alumni had made a gift to their alma mater. We need your help to reach our goal. All men and women who attended or graduated from Wilmington College or the University of North Carolina at Wilmington between 1946 and 2003 are invited to become involved. A gift of $25 or more to UNCW each fiscal year (between July 1-June 30) gives you status as an “active alumnus.” Your contribution supports the many programs provided to alumni and students. BEETLE RAFFLE BENEFITS SCHOLARSHIPS
Don’t miss your chance to own a 2003 yellow VW Seahawk Beetle, courtesy of Bob King ’66. The car is being raffled to raise $50,000 or more for merit-based scholarships through the UNCW Alumni Association. The VW is valued at $19,500. Tickets are $25. Call the Office of Alumni Relations at 910.962.2682, Bob King AutoMall at 910.799.3520 or any alumni board member about making a ticket purchase. Tickets can also be purchased at the UNCW University Union Information Center. The winning ticket will be drawn during half-time of the Homecoming men’s basketball game on Jan. 24.

HOLIDAY SUPPORT FOR THE NEEDY
The UNCW Alumni Association is providing Thanksgiving dinner for four local families. Non-perishable food is being collected at Wise Alumni House through Nov. 20. The Thanksgiving boxes will be delivered to the St. Mary’s Social Outreach Program on Nov. 21. The association is also supporting the Angel Tree project. Monetary contributions are being accepted at Wise Alumni House, 1713 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28403. Checks should be made out to Melissa Blackburn-Walton ’87, the alumni volunteer coordinating this effort. The “angels” reside at the Boys and Girls Home of LakeWaccamaw.

NC STATE GAME TICKETS AVAILABLE
The Office of Alumni Relations has secured a block of 200 reserved seats for the UNCW vs. NC State University basketball game on Jan. 3. The game will be played in the RBC Center in Raleigh; tip-off is at 8 p.m. Tickets are just $10. Priority will be given to active alumni donors (those who made a gift to UNCW after July 1, 2003) and their guests. Hotel Summit at Crabtree Valley, where UNCW alumni and Seahawk Club members will be staying, will be the pregame party site. For more information call the Office of Alumni Relations.

DRAWING SET FOR UNC GAME TICKETS
All alumni who have made a contribution to UNCW between July 1 and Dec. 15, 2003, will be placed into a drawing for a pair of tickets to the Dec. 28 UNCW vs UNC basketball game at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Game time is 1 p.m. Only three pairs of tickets will be awarded. The UNCW Alumni Association has provided these tickets as a way of saying “thank you” to those alumni who have made a contribution in support of UNCW.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR ANNUAL ALUMNI AWARDS
Nov. 30 is the deadline for nominations for the UNCW Alumnus/Alumna of the Year and Distinguished Citizen awards. Please specify the award category and describe why you think the nominee merits the award. Include the nominee’s name, address, daytime telephone number and work place. The Young Alumni Council is taking nominations for the Young Alumnus of the Year who will be announced at Homecoming 2004. BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
The UNCW alumni spotlight shines on Ed Vosnock ’71. Ed serves as vice chair of the alumni association and has the distinction of having served on the board when it was first incorporated in 1979. The association has blossomed under the years of Ed’s volunteerism. He served as treasurer and finance committee chair for two years and has served in all committee capacities during his board tenure. Recently retired as battalion chief after 29 years with the Wilmington Fire Department, he said, “We firefighters are here in our community and across this great nation to protect the citizenry, in good times and in bad times and in tragic times that may result in the ultimate sacrifice.” Ed now spends his time, fishing, traveling, gardening, going to the beach and being Mr. Fix-It. He is married to the former Diane Tucker and has two daughters, Caroline, 23, and Julia, 19. Thanks, Ed, for all you do for UNCW and the alumni association.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BOARD
Applications from alumni interested in serving on the association board of directors will be accepted until Jan. 10. The board must fill seven three-year terms and seven one-year terms. CHANCELLOR PRESENTS BENCHMARKING STUDY FINDINGS
At the October board of trustees meetings, Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo presented the UNCW benchmarking study of other institutions of higher education to which UNCW is either comparable or aspires. She is using the study and open forums to determine the direction UNCW should take under her leadership. Click HERE for information about the study .

LEUTZE HALL DEDICATED
Lakeside Hall was dedicated in honor of Chancellor Emeritus James R. Leutze on Nov. 7. Occupied in August 2001, Leutze Hall is the university’s newest classroom building. Leutze retired as chancellor June 30, 2003, after a distinguished 13-year career at UNCW. MORE

KENAN TRUST FUNDS CHAIR IN MARINE SCIENCES
The William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust has granted UNCW $667,000 to establish a William R. Kenan Jr. Chair in Marine Sciences in memory of Owen G. Kenan, who served as a member of the UNCW Board of Trustees for seven years until his death Sept. 2, 2002. When matched with $333,000 by the State of North Carolina’s Distinguished Professorship program, this will become UNCW’s first million-dollar chair. MORE

COMMENCEMENT SET FOR DEC. 13
A total of 1,121 students will receive their degrees at commencement on Dec. 13. Volunteers are needed to assist with the ceremony on Dec. 13. They should report to Trask Coliseum by 8 a.m. and be willing to work until noon. For details contact Mary Crookes at 910.962.7505 or crookesm@uncw.edu.

SECOND ANNUAL COLLEGE DAY SLATED FOR NOV. 22
There are still a few openings left for the second annual College Day on Saturday, Nov. 22. Alumni and friends, can enroll in four of 45 different hour-long courses, enjoy lunch on campus and attend an evening cultural event for an additional $5. FACULTY HONORS
Paul A. Townend, professor of British and Irish History will receive the American Conference for Irish Studies James S. Donnelly Sr. Prize for books on history and social sciences for his book, Father Mathew, Temperance and Irish Identity. MORE

English professor Lee Schweninger received a Fulbright Faculty Scholar award to teach in Skopje, the capital of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. He will lecture at the University St. Kiril i Metodij. MORE

Lou Buttino, professor of Film Studies and the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, had a premiere screening of his documentary, Broken Brotherhood: Vietnam and the Boys from Colgate, Nov. 11 in Hamilton, N.Y. MORE

Patricia Kelley, earth sciences professor, received the 2003 Association for Women Geoscientists Foundation Outstanding Educator Award. MORE

W. Frank Ainsley, earth sciences professor, received the 2003 H. H. Douglas Distinguished Service Award from the Pioneer America Society, a national interdisciplinary professional organization focusing on material cultural studies whose membership includes historical geographers, historic preservationists, folk life specialists and architectural historians.

TERRELL, SEAHAWKS TAKE EXHIBITION FINALE, 62-51
Senior forward Anthony Terrell led the Seahawks with 11 points, and the UNCW defense forced 23 turnovers in a 61-52 men's basketball victory over the Branch West All-Stars Tuesday night at Trask Coliseum. Head Coach Brad Brownell and the Seahawks open the season Nov. 21 with a first-ever matchup at Marshall. MORE

MCKEON NAMED KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Jack McKeon, the 2003 National League Manager of the Year, will serve as keynote speaker at the second annual UNCW Spring Training Banquet. The banquet will be held Jan. 31 at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside. MORE
