Chapter and Council  News


The Wilmington College Alumni Chapter will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the back room at Jackson's Big Oak Barbecue. Members will celebrate the endowment of their scholarship and the historical marker that will be placed at 13th and Market streets, in commemoration of Wilmington College's original location.

The Communication Studies Chapter also invites all communication studies alumni and their families to the first Department of Communication Studies family picnic 2 to 6 pm Saturday, Sept. 20, at Hugh MacRae Park, Shelter No. 5, where they can join faculty, staff and their families for a fun afternoon in the park. The cost is $5 for 11 year olds and up and $2.50 for 10 year olds and younger.  Please RSVP and purchase tickets from Linda Peay in the Communication Studies office by calling at 910.962.3448.

Tasha Boone-Gilliam and Denise Bailey Peak of the African American Graduates Association (AAGA) will host the group's first city-to-city social 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Copelands Restaurant in Alexandria, Va. All African-American alumni in the D.C.-area alumni are invited. Chapter president Karen Cheek will discuss the goals and objectives of AAGA, what AAGA is currently doing and encourage participation in and support of AAGA and AAGA-sponsored events. AAGA is also planning city-to-city socials in Fayetteville on Oct. 11 and in the Triad area on Oct. 23.For details, please e-mail chapter President Karen Cheek at kjcheek@alltel.net.

The AAGA board will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at the home of Karen Cheek in Sanford. All board members are urged to attend as plans for Homecoming 2004 will be the main agenda item.

The Young Alumni Council will meet at Friday, Oct. 3, at Wise Alumni House. Council members will have a chance to meet Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo. The council is looking for young alumni to serve on the council and help the alumni association build its connection with those alumni who graduated from the university in the last 10 years. If you graduated in 1993, 1995, 1996 or 1997 and would be willing to serve at least a one-year term on the council, we need to hear from you! The Triangle Alumni Chapter is co-sponsoring the second annual Carolina Panthers NFL Adventure, Sunday, Oct. 19. The first 60 people to sign up and pay will have a chance to join the UNCW Alumni Association on an exciting trip to Charlotte to see the Carolina Panthers play the Tennessee  Titans at 1 p.m. in Ericsson Stadium. The cost is $75 per person and includes a game ticket, a round-trip ticket to and from Charlotte on Amtrak, bus transportation to and from the train station in Charlotte and a tailgate party with food and refreshments provided by the Charlotte Alumni Chapter.  The train will leave Raleigh at 7:15 a.m. and arrive in Charlotte around 10:46am.  Triangle alumni may also board the train in Cary at 7:27 a.m. or Durham at 7:49 a.m.  The train will depart Charlotte after the game at 5:40 p.m. and return to Raleigh around 9:15 p.m. To make your reservations, please call the UNCW Alumni Relations Office at 800.596.2880 or 910.962.2682. The Charlotte Alumni Chapter is co-sponsoring the second annual Carolina Panthers tailgate party for UNCW alumni on Sunday, Oct. 19. The first 30 alumni to sign up and pay will have a chance to join the UNCW Alumni Association for a tailgate party with the Triangle Alumni Chapter before the Carolina Panthers take on the Tennessee Titans at 1 p.m. in Ericsson Stadium. The cost is $37 per person and includes a game ticket and tailgate party in downtown Charlotte (parking lot across the street from the French Quarter Restaurant on Church Street).  Any alumni who already have game tickets can still join all the fun at the  tailgate party for $7 per person. The Cameron School of Business Alumni Chapter will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, in Cameron Hall, Room 104.  For more information on the chapter, contact chapter president Melissa Blackburn-Walton ’87 at mmwalton@bellsouth.net.

The Charlotte Alumni Chapter will host a reception for Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo on Monday, Nov. 17. Plans are still being made for this evening event, but alumni interested in attending are asked to contact the alumni office by phone or e-mail.
