Seahawks will be flocking back to the nest Jan. 23-25 as UNCW celebrates Homecoming 2004. Special recognition goes to the Class of 1994, former cheerleaders, pep band members, Alpha Phi, Theta Chi and Kappa Alpha Psi. Click HERE for the schedule and HERE for the news release.

BEETLE RAFFLE BENEFITS SCHOLARSHIPS
The UNCW Alumni Association is raffling a 2003 yellow VW Seahawk Beetle to raise funds for merit-based scholarships. There are just a few days left to get your $25 ticket. Call the Office of Alumni Relations at 910.962.2682, Bob King AutoMall at 910.799.3520 or any alumni board member about making a ticket purchase. Tickets can also be purchased at the UNCW University Union information center. The winning ticket will be drawn during half-time of the Homecoming men’s basketball game on Jan. 24. The car, valued at $19,500, was donated by Bob King ’66.

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
The Seahawk Spotlight shines on Robert Warren, UNCW class of 1974. He also has an A.S. degree from Southwood College which he received in 1972. Robert is the superintendent of UNCW’s Landscape Services and can take pride in the beauty of the campus as he oversees the landscape plantings, color, artistic design and cleanliness. Robert also supervises the university’s motor pool and recycling efforts, which protect our environment. He is the father of one son, Robert Christopher. For fun, Robert enjoys hunting, fishing and all sports. He is an avid Seahawk spectator and Seahawk Club member. Robert is a N.C. Certified Public Manager, N.C. Certified Plantsman and is APPA-certified as a facilities manager. His volunteerism is appreciated by the alumni association, Seahawk Club, UNCW Arboretum Advisory Committee and the Ev-Henwood Advisory Committee.

COLLEGE SITE MARKED
Wilmington College alumni gathered near the corner of 13th and Market Street on Dec. 17 for the unveiling of an historical marker at the former site of Isaac Bear Hall, which was home to Wilmington College when it was founded in the late 1940s. View photos from the event.

BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION EXPLORED
UNCW is commemorating the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court decision that ended the doctrine of “separate but equal” as a constitutional principle, by engaging in a Learning Community dialogue to explore the judicial, social and moral significance of the May 1954 landmark decision, both in historical perspective as well as in its multi-dimensional aftermath. BUSINESS AFFAIRS VICE CHANCELLOR NAMED
Ronald J. Core was appointed UNCW’s vice chancellor for business affairs effective March 15. He has served as vice president for business and finance at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga., since 1997 and is principal advisor to the president for all financial and operational matters. WORKSHOP FOR SMALL BUSINESS
An introductory Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer and technology commercialization workshop will be from 1 to 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10 in the UNCW Golden Hawk Room. The Small Business Innovation Research program offers over $1.6 billion a year in grant and contract funding to research-based small businesses. MORE

SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWED
The Boseman-TenHuisen Scholarship, the first merit scholarship to benefit students of UNCW’s PRIDE organization, became fully endowed as of Dec. 12. Devon Crosbie, a UNCW senior from Fayetteville, is the first recipient of the scholarship and will receive $500. Crosbie has served as president of PRIDE for two years. MORE

John P. Bennett, professor in the Department of Health and Applied Human Sciences, will receive the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance 2004 Honor Award April 1 at the AAHPERD 2004 National Convention in New Orleans, La. MORE

TERRELL LEADS FOUR IN DOUBLE FIGURES AS SEAHAWKS CRUISE
Senior forward Anthony Terrell's 18 points led four Seahawks in double figures as UNC Wilmington moved to 4-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 72-52 win over Virginia Commonwealth Wednesday at Trask Coliseum. MORE

In the Colonial Athletic Association’s preseason baseball coaches’ poll, the Seahawks have been picked third in the conference behind defending champion Virginia Commonwealth and William & Mary. MORE

SEAHAWKS TO HONOR BROOKS
Bill Brooks, the architect of UNC Wilmington’s athletic program and its highly successful baseball coach for 27 years, will be honored Jan. 31 when the baseball team holds its annual spring training banquet at the Wilmington Hilton Riverside. MORE

They just need to link their VIC card to UNCW (code 5034). Two percent of the purchase price is donated to UNCW, plus the total is doubled with the extra funds benefiting the N.C. Teachers Legacy Hall.
