BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHt

Mike Wilson

The July spotlight features Michael Wilson ’89M of Wilmington. Michael received his undergraduate degree in 1970 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1986, he entered the MBA program at UNCW. He graduated in 1989 and now serves as the evening director at Miller-Motte Technical College. In addition to his commitment to the UNCW Alumni Association Board of Directors, he is a member of the Institute of Management Accountants. Michael is a past president of this organization and a current board member. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing, reading and the opera.

ALUMNI BOARD TO MEET AUG. 6-7
The UNCW Alumni Association Board of Directors will host its first meeting of the fiscal year Friday, Aug. 6 and Saturday, Aug. 7 in Wilmington. The fall meeting serves as a time to orient new board members and discuss association initiatives for the coming year. At 6:30 p.m. Friday the group will gather at the Bluewater Grill. The board will meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the UNCW Madeline Suite.

WILMINGTON COLLEGE MONTHLY GATHERINGS
Graduates of Wilmington College gather at 11:30 a.m. the third Wednesday of every month at Jackson's Big Oak Barbeque. This dutch-treat lunch is a great time to greet old friends and reminisce. The next meeting is July 21. For more information, contact Jim Medlin '52 at 910.791.5259.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FRESHMEN EVENTS
The alumni association is seeking alumni volunteers to assist with UNCW’s freshman Move-In 2004 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14. All volunteers will receive a Move-In 2004 T-shirt, breakfast and lunch. They are asked to check-in at Wagoner Dining Hall beginning at 6:15 a.m. to receive assignments; breakfast will be served until 7 a.m. Volunteers will need to be in place by 7:30 a.m. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, the association will sponsor a booth at the 2004 Involvement Carnival to welcome new students to UNCW by distributing gifts and making alumni-student connections. Anyone interested in volunteering for either event should contact Dru Farrar at 910.962.2684 or drupfarrar@aol.com by Tuesday, July 20.

HOMECOMING DATES ANNOUNCED
Homecoming 2005 will be held the weekend of Feb. 4-6. This will be a special weekend because both the men's and women's basketball teams will be hosting weekend home games. Watch your e-mail for more information about these events as the date draws closer.

PAST CHAIRS TO SELECT CREWS AWARD WINNER
At 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, the Past Chairs' Council of the UNCW Alumni Association will gather at Wise Alumni House to select the next J. Marshall Crews Distinguished Faculty Award winner. The award will be presented at the fall faculty meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 17. In addition to selecting an award recipient, the council will hold elections and hear from Ed Vosnock '71 the new alumni board chair. Deborah Brunson, associate professor of communication studies, was appointed interim director of UNCW's Office of Campus Diversity. She replaces Joanne Nottingham who served in this position for five years. Read the news release.

NASA CREW TRAINS IN AQUARIUS
Four NASA crewmembers will look to the deep seas this month to help prepare for journeys into deep space. They'll use UNCW'S undersea laboratory, Aquarius, to study what it may be like to live and work in other extreme environments such as the Moon and Mars. Read the news release.

TASK FORCES TO REVIEW CAMPUS VIOLENCE
AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo has appointed two task forces which are reviewing the safety, security, and education programs at UNCW after the recent tragic deaths. Read the news release.

CHANCELLOR DEPAOLO MEETS WITH PARENTS ACROSS THE STATE
Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo will travel to five sites across the state in August to meet UNCW parents and their students. The events are hosted by the UNCW Parent Development Council which is working diligently to raise the money needed to build the Colonnades that will connect sections of the new University Union complex, scheduled to be completed in spring 2006. GALLAGHER'S OLYMPIC BID ENDS AT LONG BEACH
Former UNCW swimmer Dan Gallagher finished sixth in the finals of the 50-meter freestyle July 13, narrowly missing a slot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team. He covered the distance in 22.72 seconds, slightly behind the 22.51 he clocked in semifinals the previous day. View the final results.

SUN RISES FOR BLIZZARD IN SUMMER TRYOUT
Former UNCW basketball standout and two-time CAA Player-of-the-Year Brett Blizzard was informed July 12 that he has made the cut for the Phoenix Suns summer roster. The Tallahassee, Fla., product impressed club officials over the weekend in the NBA team's rookie/free agent camp at America West Arena in Phoenix. Blizzard and the rest of the summer roster began competing in a nine-game summer session July 13 in Las Vegas. More

AARON SMITH PENNED BY CUBS
All-CAA shortstop Aaron Smith has signed with the Chicago Cubs and reported to their affiliate in Arizona League. Smith becomes the second Seahawk to sign as a baseball free agent this summer. MORE

TERRELL NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT AT SPORTS CENTER SHOWCASE
Former Seahawk Anthony Terrell was named to the All-Tournament team at the VCU SportsCenter Showcase at the Seigel Center in Richmond, Va. The event featured 60 players who are hoping to catch the eye of scouts from the NBA, NBDL and European Leagues. MORE

JUSTUS NAMED TO COACHING POST
Former UNCW men's basketball standout Joel Justus was named to Ernie Nestor's coaching staff at Elon University. Justus was a four-year letterwinner for the Seahawks and helped guide UNCW to post season berths in three of the last four seasons. MORE
