ALUMNI
GIVING INCHES UPWARD TOWARD GOAL
In April, 207 additional alumni contributed $35,525.32, bringing the total number
of alumni making contributions to UNCW to 2,605 and the total dollar amount
to $413,383.57. That brings the percentage of alumni giving to 7.73. We need
to reach Chancellor DePaolo's 10 percent goal by June 30, and only YOU can help
us do that. All who attended or graduated from Wilmington College or the University
of North Carolina at Wilmington between 1946 and 2004 are invited to become
involved. A gift of $25 or more to UNCW each fiscal year (between July 1-June
30) gives you status as an "active alumnus." Your contribution supports
the many programs provided to alumni and students. For more information, please

CAPE FEAR GRAND
SLAM JAM IS MAY 21
The UNCW Alumni Association and the Cape Fear Alumni Chapter will hold their
sixth annual Grand Slam Jam baseball pregame tailgate at 6 p.m. May 21 at Brooks
Field. The UNCW baseball team plays the Old Dominion Monarchs at 7 p.m. Tickets
(which include a game ticket) are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT
FOR CREWS AWARD
The UNCW Alumni Association is accepting nominations for the 2004 J. Marshall
Crews Distinguished Faculty Award, recognizing UNCW faculty who have made a
difference in the lives of their students. The deadline for nominations is June
30. The recipient will receive a $500 cash award and a medallion. The nomination

RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING ALUMNI
Girlvester (Sil) DeVane Anderson was the recipient of the 2004 UNCW School of
Nursing Outstanding Alumni Award for her commitment to leadership in health

ALUMNA RECEIVES
FULBRIGHT AWARD
Hoang-Anh Tran, who received her M.F.A. in creative writing May 8, received
a Fulbright scholarship to study in Vietnam. She is the ninth UNCW student awarded

ALUMNA SELECTED
FOR GENETICS INSTITUTE
Alison Jones ’01 will accompany 17 other nursing and doctoral students
from across the nation for a two-month program at the National Institute of
Nursing Research intramural summer genetic institute in Bethesda, Md. The program

OVER 1,500 DEGREES
AWARDED AT COMMENCEMENT
UNCW awarded more than 1,500 undergraduate and graduate degrees in two ceremonies
May 8 in Trask Coliseum. U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre received an honorary Doctor

CAMPUS COMMUNITY
DEALS WITH FIRST MURDER
Just as the academic year was ending, UNCW found itself in the midst of a tragedy
as Jessica Faulkner, a sophomore student from Cary, was found dead May 5 in
a room in Cornerstone Hall. Curtis Timothy Dixon, a freshman from Charlotte,
has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree rape, first-degree sexual
offense and first degree kidnapping. The investigation is ongoing. This account

GROUND BROKEN FOR
TECHNOLOGY CENTER
Ground was broken April 29 for the latest construction project on the UNCW campus
– the Technology Support Center. The 16,424-square-foot, two-story addition
to Hoggard Hall will offer state-of-the-art equipment and technology accessibility

CALL TO FIGHT CHILDHOOD OBESITY

Boney Architects and six individuals are the recipients of the 12th Annual Razor
Walker Awards, which recognize the efforts and commitment of a select group

BUSINESS EXCELLENCE
The eighth annual Business Awards Gala is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday,
May 20 at the Hilton Riverside Hotel. The event, which sold out last year, is
a celebration of business excellence and achievement in the Southeastern North

WORKSHOP FOR YOUNG
WRITERS
The UNCW Creative Writing Department will host its third annual Young Writers
Workshop June 22-26. The five-day program is designed for high school age students
of varying levels of ability and experience who are interested in studying the

UP BY SEAHAWKS IN SWEEP, 5-3
Senior closer Blake Cross retired the final 12 batters in-order to record his
league-leading 10th save as UNCW completed a sweep of Virginia Commonwealth

BULLOCK TAKES THIRD
IN HIGH JUMP AT IC4A MEET
Senior Patrick Bullock finished third in the men’s high jump to lead UNCW
finishes May 16 on the final day of the IC4A/ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

WEST FOR NCAA REGIONALS
Colonial Athletic Association champion UNC Wilmington will be competing in the
