DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI RELATIONS APPOINTED
Caroline Norelius is the new director of alumni relations. She will coordinate educational, service and social activities for the UNCW Alumni Association, which has about 38,000 members. Before accepting the position at UNCW, Norelius was the director of alumni affairs at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Conn. MORE

COME HOME TO UNCW FEB. 4-6
Alumni are invited back to campus Feb. 4-6 to celebrate Homecoming 2005. This year’s event will recognize Delta Zeta, Chi Phi and Zeta Phi Beta as well as the Class of ’95. Planned events include the annual awards dinner on Friday, Feb. 4 and a pregame social at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5 in the Hawk’s Nest. The UNCW Seahawks play Old Dominion University at 4 p.m. in Trask Coliseum. Alumni board chair Ed Vosnock ’71 will crown the Homecoming queen at half-time. On Sunday, Feb. 6 the Lady Seahawks play Delaware at 2 p.m. in Trask Coliseum. Click HERE for a complete listing of activities and to download a registration form.

Diane Matthews

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
The Seahawk Spotlight shines on Dianne Matthews ’01 for her service on the alumni association board of directors since 2002 and her work on both the awards/nomination and student relations committees. Dianne has been a university staff member for over 25 years, serving as National Testing Program coordinator for over 20 years. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in communication studies. Helping others is an important part of Dianne’s life. She has numerous volunteer interests in the community as well as on campus. She was chair of the Relay for Life at UNCW in 1996-97, chair of the Student Affairs Service Awards Banquet in 1996-97 and member of National College Testing Association. Dianne supports and volunteers with the local domestic violence shelter as well as the New Hanover County Animal Shelter. She has been actively involved in the annual Festival of Trees, benefiting Lower Cape Fear Hospice, since 1996. She enjoys spending time with her cat, Baby Cakes, and her hobbies include reading, listening to music and walking. She also enjoys the thrill of the hunt while searching through antique and thrift stores.

Matt Lutz

ALUMNI STARS
Matt Lutz co-stars in the Hallmark Channel movie McBride: The Chameleon Murder at 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14. He plays a lawyer who quits his job as a public defender. The movie is the first in a trilogy, and Lutz is working on the third in Los Angeles. Read a feature story on Matt.

Christy McDonald

By day, Christy McDonald is a receptionist for Warner Bros. Records in Nashville, but by night she’s a country singer/songwriter. Her “big break” may be coming soon. She is one of 10 finalists competing on Nashville Star, the USA Network original grassroots talent search series that is looking for the next great country music star. The first show airs at 10 p.m. Tuesday, March 1. Visit Christy's Web site.

FRIENDS HOST TOURS OF KENAN HOUSE
The Friends of UNCW will host the first public tours of the renovated Kenan House – one of the city’s most notable historic homes and the chancellor’s residence – Feb. 18-20. Tours will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18 and Saturday, Feb. 19 and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20. Kenan House is located at 1705 Market Street. Tickets, $15 per person, are available at Embellishments in Lumina Station. They will also be available at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of UNCW Scholarship Endowment. MORE

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES DEAN CANDIDATES VISIT CAMPUS
The Search Committee for the College of Arts and Sciences Dean has scheduled interviews with five finalists during the month of January. MORE

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS LEADERSHIP CHANGES
James McNab has stepped down after serving for eight years as the director of the Office of International Programs. He is taking a leave of absence for the spring semester to teach and consult at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. In July 2005, he will begin phased retirement as a professor of French in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Kim Sawrey, associate professor of psychology, is serving as interim director. MORE

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR TEACHING AWARDS
Nominations for the Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Awards and the Distinguished Teaching Professorship Awards are due Friday, Jan. 21. Descriptions, criteria and procedures

TUTORING AVAILABLE
Tutoring in reading/language arts and mathematics is available for children in kindergarten through sixth grade Jan. 24 through April 21 at the Donald R. Watson School of Education Ed Lab. Tutoring will also be offered for children with special needs. The fee depends on the number of hours contracted. For more information call 910.962.3633.

Brett Blizzard

SEAHAWKS TO HONOR ALL-TIME GREAT BLIZZARD
UNCW will retire the number of all-time great Brett Blizzard during its men’s basketball game with George Mason on Feb. 2, paying tribute to the primary cog in the school’s impressive run to three Colonial Athletic Association championships early this decade. MORE

INDOOR TRACK SEASON OPENS AT NAVY
The UNCW track and field teams kick off their indoor season Saturday, Jan. 15 by competing in the Navy Invitational at Halsey Field House in Annapolis, Md. MORE

SWIMMERS SPLASH BACK INTO COMPETITION
After nearly a two-month break from competition, UNCW swimming teams begin the second half of their season Saturday, Jan. 15 with a tri-meet against the College of Charleston and Virginia Tech in Charleston. MORE

LADY SEAHAWKS VISIT CAA RIVALS THIS WEEKEND
The UNCW women’s basketball team heads north this weekend for a trip to battle Colonial Athletic Association foes Delaware on Friday, Jan. 14 and Towson on Saturday, Jan. 16. The two-game swing begins a tough stretch for the Seahawks that features four games on the road in the next five outings. MORE

SEAHAWKS OVERCOME 14-POINT DEFICIT IN CAA WIN
UNCW scored the first nine points of the second half and erased a 14-point halftime deficit in posting a 81-74 come-from-behind victory over Hofstra in Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball action Jan. 12 at Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks host Towson Saturday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. MORE

Lectures
First Secretary Hekmat Karzai, Embassy of Afghanistan, Washington, D.C., launches the 2005 Great Decisions foreign policy lecture series at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18 in Kenan Auditorium. He will speak on “Reconstruction and Democratization in Afghanistan.” Tickets are $12 for the general public. There is no charge for UNCW faculty, staff and students. MORE

Eight additional lectures are scheduled for successive Tuesday evenings to highlight today’s most significant, far-reaching foreign policy issues. MORE

BullardEnvironmental sociologist Robert Bullard will be the featured speaker for the UNCW Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20 in Kenan Auditorium. MORE

Jonah GoldbergJonah Goldberg and Peter Beinart, editors from two of America’s most conservative and liberal publications, debate media bias at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24. General admission is $6. MORE

One Book One Community program

As part of the annual Writers’ Week sponsored by the Department of Creative Writing, Robert Creeley will give a public reading at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10 in Kenan Auditorium. This reading is co-sponsored by the North Carolina Arts Council. Admission is $7; $5 for senior citizens. Tickets can be reserved by calling 910/962-3500. Other readings scheduled for Feb. 7-11.
