The African American Graduate Association, led by Gia Todd
Long ’91, was awarded the 2005 Soaring Chapter Award
by the UNCW Alumni Association
Board of Directors. AAGA was recognized for organizing
events and activities for its target group, working cooperatively
with alumni relations staff, meeting with chapter leaders
to ensure successful efforts by chapter, supporting the mission
and vision of UNCW and the alumni association, encouraging
participation from alumni relations and communicating effectively
with target audiences. Long orchestrated a successful homecoming
celebration, two Senior
Sankofa ceremonies and many city-to-city socials.
Join the growing number of alumni who are taking their Seahawk
pride on the road. North Carolina alumni and friends can sport
the Seahawk license plate and support UNCW student scholarships
at the same time. Seahawk license plates are $25 and can be
personalized for $45. For each plate, $15 of the application
fee supports the alumni association’s scholarship program,
which currently awards 13 scholarships worth $1,500 or more.

The Cape Fear Alumni Chapter will sponsor a golf tournament
to benefit the UNCW Alumni Association on Friday, Oct. 7 at
Echo Farms Country Club. Team sponsorships are $350 and include
18 holes of golf, cart and practice balls; gift bag (including
a UNCW alumni T-shirt); bagged lunch provided by Chick-fil-A;
beverages; social hour and awards dinner cookout. Prizes will
be awarded, and a long drive contest will follow play. Sept.

Fifteen Florida
alumni flocked together last month at the
Ugly Tuna Saloona in Ft. Lauderdale. Alumni, ranging from
a 2004 graduate and to a Wilmington College graduate, came
together to exchange stories, make new friends and learn about
UNCW’s soaring reputation. Plans for future Florida
events are currently in process.

Alumni and friends are invited to
assist with the freshman move-in process. Move-In 2005 will
be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. Anyone interested
in volunteering for Move-In 2005 are asked to e-mail Lena
Donlon at donlonl@uncw.edu
with contact information and T-shirt size. All volunteers
receive a Move-In 2005 T-shirt, breakfast and lunch. Volunteers
will check-in at Wagoner Dining Hall beginning at 6:15 a.m.
to receive assignments; breakfast will be served until 7 a.m.
Volunteers will need to be in place by 7:30 a.m. MORE
UNCW supporters contributed $5,496,237 to the university
during the 2004-05 fiscal year that began July 1, 2004, and
ended June 30. The total is the largest amount UNCW has ever
raised from private donations in a fiscal year. MORE
The 2004-05 UNCW Annual Fund Phonathon was a
great success bringing in $224,778. These gifts came from
4,380 pledges from alumni, parents and friends. The phonathon
will start again Aug. 28, and UNCW students are eager to tell
alumni and friends all the wonderful things that are happening
here on the campus of UNCW. For the first time, the on-campus
phonathon will occur in both the fall and spring semesters.
By expanding the program, the university will be able to contact
even more alumni and friends, so make sure you answer the
call to support the UNCW Annual Fund when asked. Every donation

UNCW’s Coastal Ocean Research and Monitoring Program
(CORMP) deployed buoys and sensor stations in area waters
to provide continuous real-time time data measuring everything
from wave height to water temperature. One buoy, named ILM2,
is located five miles off the coast of Wrightsville Beach
(N34°08.400' W77°42.900). A second buoy named ILM3
was deployed approximately 27 miles from shore (N33°58.753'
W77°20.929'). In addition two moorings were deployed off
Johnnie Mercer’s Pier (Wrightsville Beach) and Long

Claims that men binge drink to feel more macho and women drink
to feel more equal to men are among the motivations that will
be explored over the next two years as CROSSROADS, UNCW’s
substance abuse prevention and education program, seeks to
identify, address and change gender-specific attitudes, beliefs
and behaviors that contribute to high-risk drinking. MORE

UNCW’s Watson School of Education on June 14 renewed
its partnerships with 10 area public school districts, plus
a charter school. The partnerships, in which more than 1,300
teachers and administrators in 101 schools, include placement
of UNCW education students in public school classrooms, professional
development for public school educators and collaborative
grant and research opportunities with UNCW faculty. MORE
The UNCW Office of International Programs invites area residents
to participate in the International Friendship Program by
serving as a host to an international student who will be
attending UNCW in the fall. Approximately 45 new students
from Australia, United Kingdom, P.R. China, Japan, Chile,
Finland, Brazil, France, Germany and other countries are expected
to be enrolled. MORE

The eighth annual scholarship golf tournament sponsored by
the Got-Em-On Live Bait Club and Coldwell Banker Sea Coast
Realty will be held Saturday, Sept. 24 at The Cape Golf and
Racquet Club. All proceeds will be used to fund fellowships
for UNCW graduate students in marine science. The format will
be captain’s choice, handicapped and flighted. Registration
begins at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Registration
is $55 for men and $45 for women. Lunch is provided, and a
social will follow at the clubhouse. There will be a $10,000
hole-in-one prize, as well as prizes for closest to pin, longest
drive and putting. The following sponsorships are available:
corporate, $500, includes brochure and advertising space,
a hole sign and a team; executive, $300, includes a hole sign
and a team; hole, $100, includes a sign. In 2002, the club
founded an endowment and awards an annual fellowship of $2,500.
To date, $61,500 has been raised for UNCW. To register contact

The 2005-06 UNCW men’s basketball schedule includes
a first-ever appearance in the Black Coaches Association Invitational,
the renewal of a storied rivalry with regional foe East Carolina
and the implementation of the CAA’s new 12-team scheduling
format. UNCW’s 29-game schedule features 13 home games,
13 road contests and three neutral dates. MORE
Junior golfer Michelle Jarman was honored as the CAA’s
Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and the top scholar-athlete
in women's golf for 2004-05. She also qualified for the U.S.
Women’s Amateur Championship. MORE
Sophomore Anna Raynor was selected CAA Athlete of the Year
in women’s track and field by the league’s coaches.

Jim Sprecher, who led the UNCW men’s track and field
team to its seventh CAA championship this spring, was named
CAA Coach of the Year. MORE
Former Seahawk standout Tim Preston signed with the St. Louis
Cardinals organization and has been assigned to Johnson City
