Smith served as executive director of the alumni association for 11 years. RED TIDE TOXINS POSE LINGERING THREAT TO MARINE MAMMALS
New research findings have revealed that the toxins produced during Florida red tides do pose a threat to marine mammals, even after the blooms have disappeared. As reported in the June 9 issue of Nature, scientists from the University of North Carolina Wilmington Center for Marine Science and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute together with collaborators from Mote Marine Laboratory, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have discovered how brevetoxin accumulation and transfer in the food web, a series of interconnected food chains, resulted in mass fatalities of endangered manatees in 2002 and bottlenose dolphins in 2004. UNCW OFFERS TUTORING SERVICES
Tutoring is available for children, grades K-6, in reading/language arts and mathematics. Sessions begin Wednesday, June 29 and continue through Wednesday, July 27. The fee varies according to the number of tutoring hours. For more information call 962.3633.

FUNDING AWARDED TO IMPLEMENT NEW MASTERS PROGRAMS
The UNCW Graduate School received $85,000 in funding from Council of Graduate Schools for four new professional master’s programs: a Master of Science in computer science and information systems, a Master of Arts in gerontology, Master of Arts in applied social science and Master of Arts in psychology with a concentration in applied behavioral analysis. PARTICIPANTS WANTED FOR MEMORY RESEARCH
Two UNCW psychology faculty members are seeking men and women 55 years of age and over to participate in research projects on memory and aging at UNCW. KIDS COLLEGE TUITION HALF OFF FOR UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY
All members of the UNCW community — students, alumni, faculty and staff — receive 50 percent Kids College tuition. Kids College offers students in grades 1-5 an innovative taste of collegiate life with hands-on, interactive activities in Spanish, the performing arts, movement, nutrition, reading and storytelling. It is a structured environment to enhance self-esteem, promote the importance of teamwork and build academic, creative and physical skills. All activities are lead by certified teachers. Kids College will run from 8 a.m. to noon June 20 through July 1. Cost is $125 per child and space is limited. FORMER SEAHAWK PLAYS IN U.S. OPEN
Derek Brown ’04 is the only North Carolinian in the U.S. Open field, and the mini-tour player from the small town of Walnut Cove got a surprise June 13. When he showed up on the first tee for his practice round, John Daly asked to join him. Tour veteran Tim Herron later made it a threesome, giving Brown the round of his professional life. MORE

RAYNOR FINISHES 11TH IN JAVELIN AT NCAA
After being seeded 18th entering the meet, UNC Wilmington’s Anna Raynor finished 11th overall in the javelin competition late Friday night to become the school’s first All-American at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento. MORE

BERZONSKI TOPS UNCW’S GOLF HONOREES
UNC Wilmington senior Becky Berzonski collected Player of the Year honors to lead three Seahawk women’s golfers recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association on June 10. MORE

THREE SEAHAWKS EARN CAA GOLF HONORS
CAA medallist Brian Joyce was named First Team All-Conference and newcomer Will Shambley collected Rookie of the Year honors as the league announced its men’s golf award winners for the 2004-05 season on June 10. Senior Marc-Andre Roy was named Second Team All-CAA after the Seahawks captured their second consecutive CAA title and picked up their third straight NCAA Regional appearance. MORE

UNCW BASEBALL PLACES FOUR ON ALL-STATE TEAM
The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association announced its 2005 All-State University Division team June 10, and four Seahawks were voted to the squad. Senior Ronald Hill was honored for the second straight season while Matt Poulk, Tim Preston and John Raynor were rewarded for their fine seasons. MORE

major league baseball draftTHREE SEAHAWKS SELECTED IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT
Three Seahawks were selected in the first 18 rounds of the 2005 Major League Baseball draft June 7. The Baltimore Orioles tabbed junior outfielder John Raynor in the 12th round and later selected senior pitcher Jeff Moore in the 17th (513th overall). Wilmington native Ronald Hill, a senior pitcher, was picked by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 17th round (518th overall), five slots after Moore. MORE

Lifelong learning – for students of all ages

MarineQuest – hands-on, feet-wet ocean and marine environmental enrichment camps provide age-appropriate outdoor exploration, lab activities, creative arts and games for children ages 5-16.Visit the MarineQuest Web site or call 962.2386 for details.

Kids College – During this two-week camp for children grades K-5, youngsters will explore ideas and develop new skills in Spanish, drama, music, dance, painting, martial arts and movement education. The program is designed to enhance self-esteem, promote the importance of teamwork and build academic, creative and physical skills.

Support UNCW – Record numbers were reached during the annual fund phonathon. More than 30 UNCW students made connections with alumni, parents and friends this year and set a new fund-raising record for the phonathon with $300,000 in pledges (through April 30) from more than 6,000 individuals. A total of 2,083 pledges for $99,784 were made by alumni who have never given to UNCW. Parents continue to be among the most generous among UNCW’s peer institutions with over $124,000 in pledges. Thanks to all of you who have made a pledge of support to UNCW. Contributions for the 2004-05 fiscal year are due June 30.
