COMMUNICATION STUDIES ALUMNI DISCUSS LIFE JOURNEYS
Fourteen Department of Communication Studies alumni will describe their academic and career paths since earning B.A. degrees in communication studies and field questions regarding their journeys and triumphs during Communication Studies Day 2005. Presentations will be at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday, March 18 in Leutze Hall, Room 125. MORE

WEEKEND GATHERINGS FOR VOLLEYBALL ALUMNI
Rick Reynolds, assistant volleyball coach, invites all former UNCW volleyball players to return to campus March 18-20 for a weekend of activities which includes dinner at Capt’N Bills at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 19; an alumni volleyball game at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 20 in Hanover Gym and a cookout at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Field. SEVENTH ANNUAL GRAND SLAM JAM SET
The Cape Fear Alumni Chapter will hold its seventh annual Grand Slam Jam baseball pregame tailgate at 6 p.m. Friday, April 29 at Brooks Field. At 7 p.m. alumni will cheer the UNCW baseball team as they take on the James Madison Dukes. Space is limited; reservations are required and can be made by calling 910.962.2682. To attend just the baseball game contact the athletics ticket office at 910.962.3233.

GRADS SIGN UP FOR ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
More than 300 seniors joined the UNCW Alumni Association during Senior Seahawk Salute in March, with the help of Balfour and the UNCW Bookstore. Balfour provided several incentives, including giving graduates who bought a class ring or deluxe announcement package their first year’s membership in the UNCW Alumni Association.

COMMENCEMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Volunteers are needed to assist with spring commencement Saturday, May 7 in Trask Coliseum. The College of Arts and Sciences ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the professional schools (School of Nursing, Cameron School of Business and Watson School of Education) ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. Volunteers for the morning ceremony are asked to report for duty by 8 a.m.; volunteers for the afternoon ceremony are asked to report at 12:30 p.m. All are asked to stay for the entire ceremony that will last approximately two hours. Following a national search, David P. Cordle, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., was named dean of UNCW’s College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1. MORE

Dr. Dan BadenBADEN AWARDED DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORSHIP
Daniel G. Baden, director of the UNCW Center for Marine Science, was named the first William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Marine Sciences. This is UNCW’s first million-dollar chair and the only William R. Kenan Jr. Chair designated by the Kenan Trust to a specific discipline among the more than 100 awarded to date to colleges and universities across the country. MORE

UNCW PROFESSORS OFFER MEMORY ASSESSMENT
Forgetfulness is something everyone experiences at one time or another, but at what point does it indicate the beginning of a serious memory loss? Three UNCW professors are offering a new and unique service – MARS, or Memory Assessment and Research Services, that will track subtle memory changes in individuals before major losses occur and make it easier for clients to receive interventions that help maintain memory. POLISH POLICE TRAIN AT UNCW
Six members of the Polish National Police Leadership Team are training at UNCW and meeting local law enforcement officials March 14-18 as part of the International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program, a program of the U.S. Department of Justice. MORE

UNCW is ranked in the top 25 in the nation for the production of American Chemical Society-certified bachelor of science chemistry graduates. MORE

CAMPUS E-MAIL, INTERNET SERVICE TO BE DISRUPTED
Due to the relocation of UNCW’s central computing complex March 23-April 7, there will be temporary disruptions of computer service. Campus e-mail will be down from 5 p.m. Thursday, March 24 to 8 a.m. Tuesday, March 29. Access to the Internet is expected to be available throughout the relocation except for brief periods. MORE

NATIONAL SOCCER TEAM TO PLAY AT UNCW
Some of the best young soccer talent in the country will be showcased at the UNCW Soccer Stadium March 18-20 when the United States Under-17 Men’s National Team participates in a series of three matches with North Carolina schools in the National Soccer Challenge. MORE

UNCW FALLS TO VCU IN CAA SEMIFINALS
Second-seeded Virginia Commonwealth held No. 3 seed UNCW to just two field goals over the final eight minutes to trim the Seahawks, 55-46, and advance to the championship game of the CAA Men’s Basketball Championship March 13 at the Richmond Coliseum. MORE

UNCW LOSES 53-40 TO CLOSE OUT SEASON
Freshmen Meagan Samis and Laura Barry scored 11 points apiece, but UNCW was knocked out of the CAA women's basketball tournament with a 53-40 loss to Virginia Commonwealth March 9 in Fairfax, Va. UNCW finished the season at 8-20 overall. MORE

BERMAN QUALIFIES FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Junior diver Dean Berman qualified for the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship March 13. Berman is the first Seahawk diver to qualify for the NCAA Championships, where he will compete in the 1-Meter and 3-Meter competitions. MORE

SEAHAWKS SCORE IN ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
The Seahawks finished second only to William & Mary among Colonial Athletic Association schools and performed above average in 13 of the 15 programs included in the NCAA comprehensive report. MORE

HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS COMING TO TRASK IN MARCH
Nifty passes, blind shots and trick plays are all part of the repertoire of the world famous Harlem Globetrotters. On Wednesday, March 23, basketball’s goodwill ambassadors will entertain fans at Trask Coliseum for the first time in recent memory. Tickets for the 7 p.m. game with the New York Nationals are $50 for courtside seats and $22 for general seating. “Shocking Mom: American Girls in Historical Perspective” will be presented by Linda Scott, an associate professor of advertising and women’s studies and a research associate in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17 in King Hall Auditorium. MORE

“Women in Christianity: Uncovering Their Stories” will be offered Friday and Saturday, March 18-19. The conference includes a lecture by the New Testament scholar Amy-Jill Levine, the screening of a documentary by Lou Buttino and additional lectures. Call 910.962.7750 for more information. MORE

Documentary filmmaker Adam Alphin will screen and discuss his documentary "Thank you, Eddie Hart" as part of the Friday Moviemakers Series at 1 p.m. Friday, March 18 in Morton Hall’s Bryan Auditorium. MORE

Juan Carlos Belausteguigoitia, lead environmental economist for Latin America and the Caribbean at the World Bank, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22 in Cameron Hall Auditorium as part of the Great Decisions Program. Philip Gerard and Clyde Edgerton present “All-American Heroes,” an evening of story and song with Dusty, Ace and The Propellers at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 16. The event is a fundraiser for the creative writing department’s scholarship program. General admission is $7. MORE
