THE SEAHAWK SPOTLIGHT
June 2006 - Vol. 5 - No. 3
-------------------------------------------------
Welcome to UNCW’s monthly newsletter for alumni and friends, bringing you news about the university and the alumni association. Please feel free to pass this along to other alumni and friends of UNCW. A Web-based version of this issue is available at http://www.uncw.edu/alumni/seahawk_spotlight/2006/June.html
TIMING IS EVERYTHING
Alumni who contribute to UNCW provide much more than financial assistance.
Corporations and foundations look at alumni giving rates when evaluating
grant requests, and U.S.News and World Report factors the percentage
into its statistical formula when ranking universities. Each gift represents
your confidence in the university and its commitment to provide students
with the most powerful learning experience possible. This fiscal year, UNCW
hopes to set a new standard for participation by achieving a 13 percent alumni
giving rate. We are very close to reaching the goal, and we need your help
to get there. You have the opportunity, right now, to make a difference at
UNCW. If you have not yet given this year, please download a gift form at http://www.uncw.edu/alumni/documents/alumnigiftform.pdf and
contribute to UNCW before June 30, 2006. You may also call 910.962.3751 or
866.468.6291 to contribute. If you have already given this year, thank you
for your loyalty to UNCW. Your support is sincerely appreciated!

LOCAL ECONOMY TO CONTINUE
ROBUST GROWTH
Following growth of almost eight percent during 2005, the local economy of Brunswick,
New Hanover and Pender counties is forecasted to expand by more than nine percent
over the next 12 months, predicted Dr. William W. Hall Jr., senior economist
with the Center for Business and Economics Services in the UNCW Cameron School
of Business. http://appserv02.uncw.edu/news/article.asp?ID=1947
COASTAL WATER CONTAMINATION
INCREASES WITH POPULATION
The increase in coastal area population is directly correlated to an increase
in contaminated waters and shellfish bed closings, according to UNCW research
professor Michael A. Mallin. In his article “Wading in Waste,” which
appears in the June 2006 issue of Scientific American, Mallin pointed
to a recent study which has shown that over 85 percent of all beach closures
and advisories in 2004 were a result of excessive counts of bacteria in the beach
waters. http://appserv02.uncw.edu/news/article.asp?ID=1945
NAVY MISSION ON AQUARIUS USES ‘REBREATHERS’
On June 6 the NOAA Undersea Research Center (NURC)/UNCW began work on a collaborative
effort with the Navy’s Specialized Research Diving Detachment on two
separate five-day missions. Both missions are Aquarius underwater
saturation missions in Key Largo, Fla. http://appserv02.uncw.edu/news/article.asp?ID=1943
RESOURCES FOR SUMMER, HURRICANE SEASON
UNCW’S proximity to the Atlantic Ocean is both a blessing and a curse.
The location offers opportunities for summer fun in a coastal setting, but
also places the university in the heart of hurricane territory. http://appserv02.uncw.edu/news/article.asp?ID=1942
