UNCW is proud to announce the single largest matching challenge gift ever extended
to the alumni association. Offered by philanthropists Mark Griffis and Dave Robertson,
this pledge of a $100,000 challenge is intended to spark new support for building
alumni scholarships. The challenge will run through Dec. 31, 2006. Matching dollar
for dollar, it is the goal of this challenge to support scholarship funds at

The UNCW Alumni Association will host
a pregame social and tailgate Wednesday, Dec. 5 for all alumni
and friends. A heated pregame tent will be set up outside
Trask Coliseum and the Nixon Annex and will include a catered
meal with beverages, fun and prizes. Coach Bennie Moss will
be the guest speaker. Space is limited to the first 200 people.

Volunteers are needed for commencement from 8 a.m. to noon
Saturday, Dec. 16. With tickets at a premium, this is a great
way to see your favorite students graduate. Duties include
collecting tickets, passing out programs, seating guests

Homecoming
is Feb. 9-11. The “Inferno” package
includes a ticket to the alumni association’s awards
banquet and scholarship endowment gala where the young alumna,
distinguished
citizen and alumnus of the year award winners
will be honored. Also available are the “Low Grade
Fever” and
AAGA ticket packages as well as reunion activities for the
classes of 1957 and 1978-1983.
A gathering of Colorado alumni is planned for
4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29 at the Cap
City Tavern in Denver
to watch the Seahawks play the University of Colorado Buffaloes.
Todd Olesiuk ’99, assistant director of alumni relations,
and Joanna Rickard, assistant director of alumni relations

The newly formed New England UNCW Alumni Chapter
will cheer the Seahawks against the Huskies of Northeastern

Michael Messina, associate professor of chemistry, received the 2006 Henry Dreyfus
Teacher-Scholar Award in recognition of national excellence in both research
and teaching at an undergraduate institution based on accomplishments in scholarly
research with undergraduates and a compelling commitment to teaching. MORE
UNCW is on the first-ever President's Higher Education Community
Service Honor Roll for providing distinguished community
service to Hurricane Katrina victims along the Gulf Coast. MORE
Sister Isaac Koenig was recognized Nov. 9 as an Albert Schweitzer Honors Scholar.
The award is given annually by the UNCW Honors Scholars Program and Randall Library
to a person from the Cape Fear area who exemplifies the attributes or interests

Clyde Edgerton, professor of creative writing, received the
Ragan Old North State Award for Non-fiction for Solo:
My Adventures in the Air, a memoir of his flying years
and combat missions in Vietnam. MORE
The Jack B. Levy Undergraduate Summer Research Award will consist of $1,000 given
annually to a promising student selected by the Department of Chemistry to conduct
research during the summer under the supervision of a chemistry faculty member.
It was initiated by Levy, who recently retired after 38 years at UNCW, 17 of
which were spent as chair of the Chemistry Department. With a fund-raising goal
of $25,000, Levy has pledged to match donations made on or before Dec. 15 up

High octane Tennessee broke open a close game with an 18-2 run midway
through the second half to down UNC Wilmington, 87-75, Tuesday night in the championship
game of the NIT Season Tip-Off’s south pod at the Gaylord Entertainment

UNCW’s student-athletes finished first among UNC schools
and tied for second among Colonial Athletic Association institutions
for their academic work, according to the second round of
NCAA Division I graduation rate data released by the National
Collegiate Athletic Association. MORE
Senior guard Jasmine Byrd scored a career high 27 points
to lead UNC Greensboro (1-0) to a season opening 74-46 win
over UNCW in women’s basketball Nov.12. The Seahawks
(0-1) dropped their first season opener since the 2004-05
campaign and are now 3-4 in season openers under Head Coach
Ann Hancock, 17-17 all-time. UNCW returns to action at 6
p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 against NC State at the RBC Center. MORE
UNCW midfielder Jenny Cauble of Greensboro was named ESPN
The Magazine Academic All-District III by the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Cauble
was named to the second team, earning honors off the field
for her work in the classroom for the first time in her career.
