FALL ALUMNI WEEKEND
The UNCW Alumni Association is sponsoring its second annual Fall Alumni Weekend Oct. 20-22. A Wilmington College lunch cruise will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20. The cost is $25 per person and includes a lunch buffet. At 7 p.m. Friday the women's soccer team plays Old Dominion, and the women's volleyball team plays James Madison. A “meet and greet” will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. at Shell Island Resort. Events on Saturday, Oct. 21 include a lecture on "Smart Growth - Building a Better Future for Wilmington” by. Dr. Will Moore at 10 a.m.; picnic and concert on the Campus Commons featuring the Schoolboys from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; campus tours from 2 to 3 p.m.; cocktail party in the new Fisher Student Center from 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22 events begin with breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. in Wagoner Dining Hall and end with the women’s volleyball team playing George Mason at 7 p.m. http://www.uncw.edu/alumni/events-upcoming.htm

FAMILY WEEKEND PHOTOS AT WISE ALUMNI HOUSE
During Family Weekend – Oct. 13-15 – the alumni association will offer a photo opportunity at Wise Alumni House. From 1 to 3 p.m. all students, alumni and friends are invited to have their photos taken with their friends and family at this historic home. UNCW LICENSE PLATES AVAILABLE
Alumni in Maryland and Virginia are working to start customized UNCW license plate programs in their respective states. The license plates support the UNCW Alumni Association’s undergraduate and graduate scholarship programs. 2006 N.C. LIVING TREASURE NAMED

BONJIORNO RECEIVES CREWS AWARD
Frank Bongiorno, a professor and chair of the Department of Music, received the fifth Annual J. Marshall Crews Distinguished Faculty Award at the first faculty meeting of the 2006-07 academic year. $7.52 MILLION GRANT SUPPORTS RED TIDE RESEARCH
UNCW researchers received continuation funding to study the effects of inhaled Florida red tide brevetoxins and ultimately yield treatments. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences awarded UNCW the five-year $7.53 million competitive renewal to further delve into the acute and chronic effects of inhaling toxic particles generated by red tides on Florida's west coast. http://appserv02.uncw.edu/news/article.asp?ID=2007

UNCW RECOGNIZED FOR TEACHER EXCELLENCE
UNCW was named a 2006 recipient of the 2006 Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in Teacher Education by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. http://appserv02.uncw.edu/news/article.asp?ID=2006

FEDERAL GRANT SUPPORTS VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAM
U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre (D-NC) presented UNCW a check for $260,304 in federal funds to help prevent violent behavior among college students. http://appserv02.uncw.edu/news/article.asp?ID=1997

UNCW IS BEST AGAIN
UNCW received the 2007 "Best in the Southeast" designation by The Princeton Review. FISHER STUDENT CENTER OPENED

SEAHAWKS OFFICIALLY IN ESPN BRACKETBUSTERS
After months of speculation, CAA defending men's basketball champion UNC Wilmington officially became a part of the ESPN BracketBusters field. The Seahawks, 25-8 last season and an NCAA participant for the fourth time in seven years, will be joined by the remaining 11 members of the CAA in the 102-team field. Sixteen different conferences will be represented in the two-day event, which is set for Feb. 16-17, 2007, at sites to be determined. http://appserv02.uncw.edu/athletics/article.asp?ID=2656

ALUMNI INVITED TO LANDFALL TRADITION GOLF TOURNEY
Mark your calendar to watch UNCW men’s and women’s golf teams compete against 11 of the country’s top teams in the fifth Landfall Tradition, a nationally-recognized collegiate golf tournament, at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington. The Landfall Tradition begins Thursday, Oct. 26, with a practice round and reception, followed by 54 holes of golf on the Jack Nicklaus Course set for Friday through Sunday, Oct. 27-29. http://www.landfalltradition.com/home.html

ENDOWMENT TO BOOST BASKETBALL PROGRAM
All-time greats Brett Blizzard, Bill Mayew and Brian Rowsom have more in common than just having their jerseys retired: They each want to see UNCW men’s basketball benefit from a newly-established endowment fund that will ensure future success for the program.
