The UNCW Alumni Association invites alumni and friends to Tealgate – Seahawk
style – with food, games and spirit-filled fun. Tealgates start
two hours before the tip-off of men’s basketball games on Jan.
26, Feb. 9 and March 1 at Trask Coliseum. Advance tickets are $12 for
adults and $5 for children 6-12; children under 6 are admitted at no
cost. Admission includes food and beverages, but not game ticket. Tickets

Homecoming 2008 will be Feb. 8-10. As part of the weekend celebration,
the alumni association will recognize Herbert
Fisher ’53 and Sylvia Fisher ’50 as Alumni of the Year,
Bill Mayhew ’97,
’98M as Young Alumnus of the Year and Tyrone Rowell as Citizen
of the Year at the annual
awards banquet and scholarship endowment gala on Friday, Feb. 8.
On Saturday, Feb. 9, Coach Benny Moss will be the featured speaker at
the Tealgate,
followed by the men’s basketball game at 7 p.m. when the Seahawks

CREW CLUB ALUMNI GATHERING
Crew Club alumni will have their annual
rowing and networking social on March 15. Last
year more than 20 alumni and 12 current Crew Club members met at the UNCW
Boathouse for a row. They had lunch, a campus tour and then finished

Local humanitarian Frankie
Roberts will receive his angel wings at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21 when
he is honored at UNCW’s
10th annual screening of It’s A Wonderful Life. Roberts
is the co-founder and executive director of Leading Into New Communities
Inc. (LINC), a nonprofit agency that provides shelter and services for
men and women returning from prison.
Frank Capra Jr., president of EUE/Screen Gems Studios and the person
many consider the father of the Wilmington film industry, died Wednesday,
Dec. 19. He was 73 years
old. Capra also served as the Distinguished Visiting Professor of Film
Studies at UNCW and helped set up the university’s original film
studies program. As studio chief, he established internships for UNCW
students at the facility.
Taking action to address the acute shortage of nurses in the state,
the UNCW School of Nursing is accepting
and graduating more nursing students, including its first class of prelicensure
nurses to graduate in December. On Saturday, Dec. 15, 31 new nurses
left UNCW to fill critically needed nursing positions. Every
student had accepted a job or received job offers prior to graduation.
Twenty-five are staying in North Carolina, going to nursing jobs at
New Hanover Regional Medical Center, UNC Hospitals, Carolinas Medical
Center, Duke University Medical Center, Wake Med and other health care
facilities in the state.
The UNCW Board of Trustees approved
tuition increases for the 2008-09 academic year in the amount of $46
for in-state undergraduate students, $55 for in-state graduate students,
and $250 for out-of-state undergraduate or graduate students. Fee increases
totaling $82.75 for athletics, health services, student activities and
education/technology also were approved.
Tuition and fee requests from all of the UNC campuses will be presented
to the Board of Governors for final approval at its February 2007 meeting.

The UNCW Athletics Department has announced the launch
of Seahawks Tomorrow, a community outreach program designed to give the
university’s
student-athletes the opportunity to encourage elementary and middle school
children to stay in school, achieve academic success and stay physically
active.
The Seahawk Club is sponsoring a bus trip to the Saturday,
Dec. 22,
men’s basketball game with East Carolina in Greenville. The
Seahawks, 7-4, will face the Pirates, 4-5, in a 7 p.m. tip-off at
Minges Coliseum. It marks the 59th meeting between the eastern North

Tickets for the seventh induction of the UNCW Athletic
Hall of Fame may be purchased in the Athletic Department
in the Nixon Annex.
The banquet will be Saturday, Feb. 9 in the Warwick Center Ballroom. The
reception begins at 11:30 a.m. with the luncheon and
ceremony slated to get under way at noon.
Tickets are $15 each.
