The UNCW Alumni Association invites alumni and friends to Tealgate – Seahawk
style – with food, games and spirit-filled fun. Tealgates start two hours
before the tip-off of men’s basketball games on Jan. 26, Feb. 9 and March
1 at Trask Coliseum. Advance tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children 6-12;
children under 6 are admitted at no cost. Admission includes food and beverages,
but not game ticket. Tickets can be purchased online at www.uncwalumnitickets.com.
Homecoming 2008 will be Feb. 8-10. As part of the weekend celebration,
the alumni association will recognize Herbert
Fisher ’53 and
Sylvia Fisher ’50 as Alumni of the Year, Bill Mayhew ’97,
’98M as Young
Alumnus of the Year and Tyrone
Rowell as Citizen of the Year at the annual
awards banquet and scholarship endowment gala on Friday, Feb. 8.
On Saturday, Feb. 9, Coach Benny Moss will be the featured speaker
at the Tealgate,
followed by the men’s basketball game at 7 p.m. when the Seahawks

The Omicron Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. honored Chancellor
Rosemary DePaolo with its Citizen of the Year award during the fraternity’s
National Achievement Week observance on Veterans Day.
Wilmington inventor and humanitarian Jock Brandis was recognized as the
2007 Albert Schweitzer Honors Scholar by the UNCW Honors Scholars Program
and Randall Library. The award recognizes individuals from the Cape
Fear area who exemplify the attributes or interests of Albert Schweitzer.
Brandis was recognized for his contributions as founder of the Full
Belly Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to designing and
distributing unique technologies born of his invention, the Malian
Peanut Sheller.

Sophomore guard Osiris Eldrdge ignited a second-half comeback, scoring
17 of his game-high 30 points in the final period, to power Illinois
State over visiting UNC Wilmington, 89-73, in an opening round pairing
of the Chicago Invitational Challenge Sunday at Redbird Arena.
Freshman Kobi
Salinas was named CAA Diver of the Week Tuesday, Nov. 13 for the
second time this season after sweeping the diving events in a loss to
Old Dominion. Salinas, who previously earned the honor on Oct. 30, set
a school freshman record with 347.03 points in winning the 3-meter dive.
The previous mark of 328.85 was set by Josh Shuten in 1983.
Team Teal is a free program that rewards Seahawk fans for attending sporting
events throughout the year. Prospective members can sign up by filling
out a form and
faxing it to Mike Vaccaro at 910.962.3002. Members receive a key tag
to be scanned at all home athletic events and will earn a point for
every game attended. Prizes are given out for every 10 points earned.
Those who attend 70 or more events will be eligible for the grand prize
drawing of a big screen TV.
Baseball sparkplug Sandy Dew, coaching veteran Calvin Lane, men’s
track and field leaper Michael McDuffie and women’s soccer scoring
phenom Christy Timbers Rife will be honored during the seventh induction
of the UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame. A reception will be held at 11:30
a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Warwick Center Ballroom, with the induction
ceremony slated to follow at noon. Tickets may be purchased for $15 each
in the UNCW Sports Information Office in the Nixon Annex.
