Lindsay A. Terry is the new assistant
director of alumni relations, in charge of chapter development. She comes
from the Office of Career Management at the Robert H. Smith School of
Business at the University of Maryland, where she worked with alumni
by developing recruiting plans, events and programs to support their
efforts in hiring new graduates. She has a bachelor’s degree in
advertising and public relations from Pennsylvania State University.
The Office of Transition Programs is looking for volunteers
to help with the spring commencement ceremonies. Because of the increase
of students graduating, there will be three graduation ceremonies
on May 10. The College of Arts and Sciences will hold a ceremony
at 9:30 a.m. for the sciences, arts and humanities and another at
1 p.m. for the social sciences. The professional schools will hold
a ceremony at 5 p.m. Duties will include collecting
tickets, passing out programs, traffic control and directing guests
to seats. Food and refreshments will be provided to those
volunteering for more than one ceremony. If interested, please send

The Cape Fear Chapter of the UNCW Alumni Association
is sponsoring Grand Slam Jam on May 16 at Brooks Field. Bring your family
and friends to campus to support the Seahawks’ baseball team and
to learn more about the chapter, the alumni association and upcoming

The Fisher
University Union, a newly renovated building in the heart of campus,
was named for alumni Herbert ’53 and Sylvia ’50 Fisher, and
their three children, two of whom are alumni. The Fishers established
a $1 million endowed fund to support the Union and enhance its programs.
In addition to Herb and Sylvia, the donors are alumna Diana Fisher Abbott,
Pam Fisher Snyder and Carlton Fisher, Class of 1983 and vice chair of
the UNCW Foundation Board.
Philanthropist
Irwin “Ike” Belk established a distinguished
professorship at UNCW to recruit
and retain outstanding faculty for the School of Nursing.
The Charlotte business executive and higher education advocate
provided a major gift, enabling the university to receive matching funds
from the C.D. Spangler Foundation of Charlotte and North Carolina's Distinguished
Professors Endowment Trust Fund, to endow the Irwin “Ike” Belk
Distinguished Professorship at $1 million.

Charles Maimone was named vice chancellor for business
affairs at UNCW following approval of
the appointment by the executive committee of the board
of trustees. The appointment is effective May 12.
More than 150 differently abled individuals from across North Carolina
will experience the joy of recreational activities during the seventh
annual Accessible Recreation Day April 18 at UNCW.
Organized by the Coastal Carolina Partnership for Accessible Recreation,
the day offers differently abled individuals of all ages the opportunity
to try multiple activities, adapted equipment and engage with others
who support their recreational interests.
Disney Institute is bringing its renowned professional development
program, “The Disney Keys to Excellence” to Sea Trail Resort on May 12. Presented
by Brunswick Community College and sponsored by UNCW, Brunswick County Economic
Development Commission and Cape Fear Workforce Development Board in collaboration
with Brunswick Community College’s Small Business
Center, the full-day event will give area business professionals a chance to
discover the business behind the magic. This day full of exciting
program sessions will introduce participants to innovative Disney business
strategies that they can easily implement in their own organizations.

Sophomore Kyle
Lewis tossed five innings of 5-hit relief and senior Daniel Hargrave
finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle as No. 29 UNCW
trimmed The Citadel, 16-6, in non-conference baseball action April 15
at Brooks Field.
Freshman Kobi Salinas
won the men’s
3-meter dive as the Seahawks won their seventh consecutive Colonial Athletic
Association championship March at the McKay Natatorium. The Lady Seahawks
finished third behind champion Towson and second-place William & Mary.
The men’s soccer team and Wilmington Hammerheads
are joining forces to raise money for the New Hanover County Relay
for Life with an exhibition soccer game April 19 at the UNCW Soccer
Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
UNCW's men's and women's teams have
collected the fourth and sixth seeds for the CAA Tennis Championships
scheduled for April 17-20 in Newport News, Va.
First-year coach Mait DuBois and the men concluded the regular season
with a 14-6 overall record and 3-1 conference mark, winning their last
five matches.
