NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY

To: Our University Community
The tragic shootings yesterday at Northern Illinois University are a stark reminder of the importance we must all place on safety and security. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of that tragic event and their families. At the same time, we must make every effort to reduce significantly the opportunity for such an incident to occur at UNC Wilmington. The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff and visitors continues to be my highest priority. Complete text.

Homecoming crowdUNCW ALUMNI CELEBRATE HOMECOMING 2008
UNCW alumni celebrated Homecoming 2008 with great events sponsored by the alumni association, including the awards banquet and scholarship endowment gala, Tealgate celebration and the Homecoming Legacy Scholarship Dance. About 140 alumni and friends attended the banquet and silent auction, which raised more than $20,000 for the 16 scholarships supported by the alumni association. View Homecoming photo galleries
 
CSB ALUMNI MIXER SCHEDULED FOR FEB. 26

STARGELL SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS NURSING STUDENTS
The Willie Stargell Foundation has created a merit scholarship to benefit nursing students at the University of North Carolina Wilmington who plan to specialize in the treatment of patients with kidney disease or patients on dialysis. The Willie Stargell Scholarship honors the memory of the legendary Willie "Pops" Stargell, a star baseball player with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

BRITISH ENTREPRENEURS VISIT CAMPUS
Glen Yearwood and Tim Campbell, two entrepreneurs from the United Kingdom with ties to Black and Asian ethnic groups in England as well as Barbados in the Caribbean, visited UNCW Jan. 27-30 to explore how they can help UNCW with reciprocal international student and faculty exchanges and use their expertise to improve campus diversity.

Danny GloverGLOVER PAYS TRIBUTE TO KING
Acclaimed actor and activist Danny Glover reminded the capacity crowd at UNCW that the evening of Jan. 24 was not about him. "We are here to celebrate a dream. Forty years after Dr. King's death, we still have his words that apply," said Glover during "An Evening with Langston and Martin," part of UNCW's 25th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

In January, Wal-Mart on Sigmon Road in Wilmington launched the Seahawk Cove offering shoppers a variety of officially licensed Seahawk merchandise. Apparel and specialty items can also be purchased at the UNCW bookstore and many other Wilmington businesses. Complete list of area merchants.

Men's basketballSEAHAWKS WIN 77-64 VERDICT OVER THE TRIBE
UNC Wilmington parlayed its inside-outside combination of senior center Vladimir Kuljanin and senior guard Daniel Fountain into a 77-64 verdict over William & Mary in CAA men’s basketball action Feb. 13 at Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks travel to Fairfax, Va., Saturday, Feb. 16, for a 6 p.m. contest against George Mason in a nationally-televised game on ESPNU.

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME ADDS FOUR NEW MEMBERS
The UNC Wilmington Athletic Hall of Fame welcomed four new members Saturday as baseball sparkplug Sandy Dew, coaching veteran Calvin Lane, men’s track and field standout Michael McDuffie and women’s soccer scoring phenom Christy Timbers Rife joined the elite group during a Saturday, Feb. 9 ceremony on campus.

STUDENT-ATHLETES EXCEL ACADEMICALLY IN FALL
Proving once again that they value every aspect of the educational experience, UNCW’s 327 student-athletes recorded their highest grade point average in a semester and posted their highest cumulative grade point average ever during the fall 2007 term. The group posted an impressive 3.008 GPA last semester and carries an overall cumulative GPA of 2.996. Sixteen student-athletes compiled a perfect 4.00 GPA, while 95 earned a 3.50 or better.
