Kimberly AlphinNOTHING BUT 'NET WINNER
Kimberli Alphin '04 of Kinston scored a UNCW Homecoming package in the Nothing but ‘Net contest sponsored by the Office of Annual Giving. Nearly 900 alumni registered online for the package that includes tickets to the Feb. 9 Homecoming Tealgate sponsored by the alumni association and to the men’s basketball game against the James Madison Dukes, a two-night stay at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside, two tickets to tour a historic house in downtown Wilmington and dinner for two at the Oceanic in Wrightsville Beach. Alphin is a sixth-grade teacher at Frink Middle School in Lenior County.

Homecominghomecoming 2008 is feb. 8-10
As part of the weekend celebration, the alumni association will recognize Herbert Fisher ’53 and Sylvia Fisher ’50 as Alumni of the Year, Bill Mayhew ’97, ’98M as Young Alumnus of the Year and Tyrone Rowell as Citizen of the Year at the Annual Awards Banquet and Scholarship Endowment Gala on Friday, Feb. 8. On Saturday, Feb. 9, Coach Benny Moss will be the featured speaker at the Tealgate at 5 p.m. under the tent outside Trask Coliseum, followed by the men’s basketball game at 7 p.m. when the Seahawks play the James Madison Dukes. The Homecoming Legacy Scholarship Dance, benefiting the Denis G. Carter Legacy Scholarship, will be held at 9 p.m. in the Warwick Center Ballroom. It will feature music by the Four Knights. TealgateTEALGATE AT TRASK
The UNCW Alumni Association invites alumni and friends to Tealgate – Seahawk style – with food, games and spirit-filled fun. Tealgates start two hours before the tip-off of men’s basketball games on Jan. 26, Feb. 9 and March 1 at Trask Coliseum. Advance tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children 6-12; children under 6 are admitted at no cost. Admission includes food and beverages, but not game ticket. Tickets can be purchased online.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR
The Cameron School of Business Alumni Chapter mixer will be held during Business Week 2008, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 in the Computer Information Systems Building.  All Cameron alumni and retired faculty are welcome to attend this free networking social. Please rsvp to alumni@uncw.edu.

KiplingersUNCW AMONG TOP FOUR “BEST VALUES” IN STATE
UNCW is one of the top four "Best Values" among public universities in North Carolina, according to Kiplinger's 2008 rankings. Since 2003, Kiplinger's has rated UNCW in the top five for the state. Kiplinger's said public colleges and universities in the top 100 "are noteworthy for their combination of top-flight academics and affordable costs." UNCW ranked 36th nationally for "best value" to in-state students and 51st for out-of-state students.

men's basketballSEAHAWKS VICTORIOUS OVER TIGERS
The Seahawks dialed long distance behind Daniel Fountain’s 19 first-half points to erase an early 11-point deficit and shot 63.3 percent from field for an 81-68 victory over visiting Towson in a CAA men’s basketball game Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Trask Coliseum.

UNCW CLAIMS 58-50 VICTORY OVER DELAWARE
Sophomore guard Greta Luksyte scored eight straight points over a two-minute span midway through the second half to lead UNCW to a 58-50 victory over Delaware in CAA women’s basketball action Thursday, Jan. 17 at the Bob Carpenter Center.

softballFIVE SIGNED ON FOR 2009 SOFTBALL SEASON
Softball head coach Melissa Jarrell announced the signing of five prep softball standouts to National Letters of Intent (NLI) for the 2008-09 academic year. Current high school seniors Amanda Davenport (Raleigh, N.C./West Johnston), Kelsey Eddinger (Raleigh, N.C./West Johnston), Katelyn Houmard (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose), Jennifer Ladd (Durham, N.C./Riverside), and Stacey Pinno (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) will join the Seahawks on campus in the fall of 2008.

swimmingMORTENSEN SETS POOL RECORD
Junior Danielle Mortensen set a pool record in the 1650 freestyle as the Seahawks swept visiting College of Charleston in swimming and diving action Sunday, Jan. 13  at the Seahawk Natatorium. The Lady Seahawks improved to 4-7 with a 140-93 win while the men upped their mark to 2-6 following a 137-92 victory.
