Like any young golfer, UNCW’s T.J. Harvey always
dreamed of the opportunity to play with her favorite golfer on one of
the toughest courses in the world.
Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, professional golfer Jim Furyk and
the PGA TOUR, Harvey had that opportunity July 8 when the redshirt freshman
teed it up with the 2003 U.S. Open Champion at TPC Sawgrass, home to
the Players Championship.
Matt Clark, who shaped CAA rival Georgia
State into a nationally recognized program over the last five years,
is UNCW's new men’s golf coach.
Clark, 32, was selected from a field of more than 60 candidates following a comprehensive
national search and begins his new post later this month. He piloted the Panthers
to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances during his time in Atlanta, including
CAA championships in 2006 and 2008.
TennisRecruiting.net ranked
the
men’s tennis recruiting class 18th best nationally among
mid-major programs. Joining the Seahawks next year will be Ryan Anthony
Ybarra (All-Saints Episcopal High School/Palestine, Texas), Anton Nikolov
(Ashland High School/Ashland, Mass.) and Dirk Bair (Berkeley High School/Moncks
Corner, S.C.).
Seahawk fans everywhere always knew former guard
Brett Blizzard was one of college basketball’s greatest long-range
shooters. Now, ESPN hoops analyst Jay Bilas has validated it. In
a story posted on ESPN.com, Bilas ranked Blizzard 22nd on his chart
of college basketball’s all-time Top 25
three-point shooters. Blizzard, who is now playing professionally
in Italy, led the Seahawks to four post-season appearances during
his prolific career and has his jersey hanging in the rafters of
Trask Coliseum.
Rick
Jones, a former UNCW pitcher and current head coach at Tulane, was tabbed
by USA Baseball to be the head coach of the National Team for the 2009
squad. This will be Jones’ third tour with USA Baseball, having previously
served on the staffs of the USA Presidential Cup staff in 1989 and the
National Team in 1990. Jones, who played for UNCW in 1974-75 and was
a reliever on the 1975 NAIA World Series club, recently, concluded his
15th season at Tulane.
