Durham BullsTRIANGLE CHAPTER HOSTS PICNIC WITH THE BULLS
Join the UNCW Triangle Alumni Chapter for an evening with the Durham Bulls, Sunday, Aug. 10. The picnic begins on the AICPA first base party deck at 4:30 p.m. First pitch is at 5:05 p.m. when the Bulls take on the Richmond Braves. The $15 admission includes game ticket and refreshments. Online ticket sales will end at noon Wednesday, July 30. Tickets are not refundable and will not be available at the door; this event is presale only.

WSE ALUMNI TO MEET
The next meeting of the Watson School of Education Alumni Chapter will be at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11 in the Education Building, Room 162.

UNCW MAKES FUNDRAISING HISTORY
For the first time in its history, UNCW received more than $13.8 million in philanthropic support during a single fiscal year, including several million-dollar contributions to endow scholarships and professorships and to enhance academic, athletic and other campus programs.

g. An experienced higher education administrator and educator, Chapman comes to UNCW from West Texas A&M University, where he had served as provost and vice president for academic affairs since 2005.

INTERIM SCHOOL OF NURSING DEAN NAMED
Susan F. Pierce, former professor and current professor emerita in the University of North Carolina School of Nursing, joined UNCW July 1 as a visiting professor and interim dean of the School of Nursing.

STUDENTS GET L.A. INTERNSHIPS
Ten students from the Department of Film Studies are summer interns in the largest film market in the country, thanks to a grant from the prestigious Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

TJ Harvey and Jim FurykPRO GOLFER MAKES STUDENT'S
WISH COME TRUE

Like any young golfer, UNCW’s T.J. Harvey always dreamed of the opportunity to play with her favorite golfer on one of the toughest courses in the world. Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, professional golfer Jim Furyk and the PGA TOUR, Harvey had that opportunity July 8 when the redshirt freshman teed it up with the 2003 U.S. Open Champion at TPC Sawgrass, home to the Players Championship.

CLARK TAPPED AS MEN'S GOLF COACH
Matt Clark, who shaped CAA rival Georgia State into a nationally recognized program over the last five years, is UNCW's new men’s golf coach. Clark, 32, was selected from a field of more than 60 candidates following a comprehensive national search and begins his new post later this month. He piloted the Panthers to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances during his time in Atlanta, including CAA championships in 2006 and 2008.

MEN'S TENNIS RECRUITING CLASS #18 MID-MAJOR RANKING
TennisRecruiting.net ranked the men’s tennis recruiting class 18th best nationally among mid-major programs. Joining the Seahawks next year will be Ryan Anthony Ybarra (All-Saints Episcopal High School/Palestine, Texas), Anton Nikolov (Ashland High School/Ashland, Mass.) and Dirk Bair (Berkeley High School/Moncks Corner, S.C.).

BLIZZARD RECOGNIZED BY ESPN.COM
Seahawk fans everywhere always knew former guard Brett Blizzard was one of college basketball’s greatest long-range shooters. Now, ESPN hoops analyst Jay Bilas has validated it. In a story posted on ESPN.com, Bilas ranked Blizzard 22nd on his chart of college basketball’s all-time Top 25 three-point shooters. Blizzard, who is now playing professionally in Italy, led the Seahawks to four post-season appearances during his prolific career and has his jersey hanging in the rafters of Trask Coliseum.

FORMER SEAHAWK TO LEAD TEAM USA BASEBALL SQUAD
Rick Jones, a former UNCW pitcher and current head coach at Tulane, was tabbed by USA Baseball to be the head coach of the National Team for the 2009 squad. This will be Jones’ third tour with USA Baseball, having previously served on the staffs of the USA Presidential Cup staff in 1989 and the National Team in 1990. Jones, who played for UNCW in 1974-75 and was a reliever on the 1975 NAIA World Series club, recently, concluded his 15th season at Tulane.

Carolina BalletThe Raleigh-based Carolina Ballet has begun a month-long summer residency at UNCW and will create new ballets for its repertoire, choreographed by artistic director Robert Weiss and principal guest choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett. The company will open its rehearsals to the public from 4 to 6 p.m. July 15, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. July 17, 4 to 6 p.m. July 22 and 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. July 24. All open rehearsals will be held at Kenan Auditorium. The program will culminate in three final performances at Kenan Auditorium, including an Aug. 2 world premiere gala.
