Alumni who contribute to UNCW provide much more than
financial assistance. Corporations and foundations consider alumni participation
when evaluating grant requests, and U.S.News & World Report factors
the percentage into its statistical formula when ranking universities.
Each gift represents your confidence in the university and its commitment
to provide students with the most powerful learning experience possible.
You have the opportunity,
right now, to make a difference at UNCW. Make sure your participation
is counted before the end of the academic year. You can make your gift
online or
by mail. You
may also call 910.962.3751 or 866.468.6291 to contribute. If you have
already given this year, thank you for your loyalty to UNCW. Your support
is sincerely appreciated!

Following
growth of three percent during 2007, the local economy of Brunswick,
New Hanover and Pender counties is forecast to expand by approximately
three percent during 2008 and five percent during 2009 according to William
W. Hall Jr., senior economist with the Center for Business and Economic
Services at UNCW. Hall noted that actual economic growth for 2007 was
substantially below that initially forecast (5 percent), largely due
to lower-than-expected growth in the fourth quarter. In particular, after
removing seasonal variation and adjusting for inflation, retail sales
tax collections fell between the third and fourth quarter. Powerpoint

UNCW and the Wilmington
Housing Authority (WHA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on May 20
to establish a satellite office at a WHA development site. The satellite
office will provide a centralized resource for ongoing services, research
and collaboration with the WHA's public housing residents and surrounding
neighbors.
Hailed
as one of the top dance companies in the nation, the Raleigh-based Carolina
Ballet returns to UNCW for
a month-long summer intensive and residency. On Aug. 1 the company
will present a preview of its new works, and on Aug. 2 the
students of the Carolina Ballet Summer Intensive will be featured in
a matinee performance with special guest dancers from the company. The
world premiere performance and gala celebration will be Aug.
2, followed by a meet-the-artists reception with live music and a champagne
toast.

Led by Colonial Athletic
Association Player of the Year Mark Carver and Rookie of the Year Cameron
Roth, UNCW placed a school-record five players on the 2008 N.C. Collegiate
Sports Information Association All-State squad. Joining them were junior
Brad Holt and seniors Jason Appel and Daniel Hargrave.

draft picks)
Busy working out prior to the National
Basketball Association’s draft later this month, former UNCW
basketball standout Vladimir Kuljanin is sharpening his skills in Las
Vegas, with plans to play for the Canadian men’s basketball team this
summer. “My ultimate goal is to play in the NBA,” said Kuljanin, “but
if that does not work out, I would like to play in the Spanish first
division, the best in Europe and second to the NBA. My agent, Justin
Zenick of ASM Sports, has told me that the top European teams are interested
in me, so it will be a very exciting summer.”
Former UNCW women’s basketball standout Vertha Dixon-Wright
is the 2008 recipient of the N.C. High
School Athletic Association’s
Pat Gainey Award. Dixon-Wright has served as head coach of local New
Hanover High School for the past 20 seasons, amassing 293 career victories.
She is a three-time Mideastern Conference Coach of the Year.
Tennis recruiting web site TennisRecruiting.net ranked
UNCW’s
men’s tennis recruiting class as 18th best nationally among
mid-major programs. “When we evaluate players, we look at their
results, character, work ethic, upside potential and, most importantly,
the burning desire to reach their absolute potential," said head
coach Mait Dubois. “Each of these players rate
strongly in all of these categories and will be great additions to our program.”
Joining the Seahawks next year will be Ryan Anthony Ybarra (All-Saints Episcopal
HS/Palestine, Texas), Anton Nikolov (Ashland HS/Ashland, Mass.) and Dirk Bair
(Berkeley HS/Moncks Corner, S.C.).
