More than 1,800
undergraduate and graduate degrees were awarded May 10 in three ceremonies
at Trask Coliseum.
Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo
reminded the graduates to continue their educations and to give
back to their communities. "Travel far and wide, read often,
study another language, pursue another degree, take non-credit courses,
embrace new experiences and welcome the opportunity to meet new people," she
said. "Invest in yourself
by dedicating time and resources to continue your education.

Brian R. Chapman was named provost and vice chancellor
for academic affairs at UNCW. An experienced
higher education administrator and educator, Chapman comes to UNCW
from West Texas A&M University, where he has served as provost and
vice president for academic affairs since August 2005.
Carole Tallant, professor of communication studies and director of Storytelling
in the Community at UNCW, was
selected as a 2008 Excellence in Teaching Award recipient by the Board
of Governors of the 16-campus University of North Carolina.

UNCW lost a dedicated trustee and true friend of the
university in April with the sudden death of Windell Daniels. He
was appointed to the UNCW Board of Trustees in 2007 by the
UNC Board of Governors. The Wilmington resident
served as a member of the External Affairs and Educational Planning and
Programs committees.

UNCW used a 14-run fifth inning on its way to a 23-4
win over James Madison as the Seahawks clinched the Colonial Athletic
Association regular season title May 11. The Seahawks will be the top
seed at the CAA
Tournament May 21-24 at Brooks Field. The 29th-ranked
Seahawks (39-11-1, 23-3-1 CAA) set a CAA regular season record with their
23rd conference win of the season. The title was the Seahawks’ third
outright and fourth overall. Read

UNCW student-athletes continue to make solid academic
progress, and it shows in the annual NCAAA academic Progress Rate report.
All 19 of UNCW’s intercollegiate teams remain in full compliance
with the governing body’s guidelines, and the men’s basketball
team received a Public Recognition Award for being in the
top 10 percent nationally for its work in the classroom.
Baseball standout Daniel Hargrave and swimming workhorse
Caitlin Kirsteier received the Thomas V. Moseley Award as UNCW’s
top student-athletes for 2007-08 at the annual athletic awards banquet.
Justin Barefoot and Jenny Cauble received the Chancellor’s Cup
Award, Todd Hendley was the inaugural recipient of the Soaring Seahawk
Award, Bob Lloyd was presented the William J. Brooks Distinguished
Service Award and the baseball squad garnered the Team Leadership Award.

Men’s basketball coach
Benny Moss, who orchestrated one of the nation’s best turnarounds
in the NCAA Division I ranks this past season, was rewarded with
a two-year contract extension.
The two years, added to
the three remaining on his initial pact, will keep Moss with the Seahawks
through the 2012-13 season.

Tiffany Bowie is the new administrative assistant in the UNCW Office
of Alumni Relations. She returned to UNCW in April after serving as the
director of membership, marketing and accounts for the National Association
of Foreign-Trade Zones in Washington, D.C. Prior to that role, she worked
for the American Composites Manufacturers Association as the membership
and certification coordinator in Arlington, Va.
