UNCW is one of the top 25 "Best
Values" among public universities in the nation and one of the top
three in North Carolina, according to Kiplinger's Personal Finance.
For 2008-09, UNCW is ranked 25th nationally as a "best
value" for in-state students and 35th for out-of-state students.
This is a significant improvement over last year's rankings, in which
UNCW placed 36th in value for in-state students and 51st for out-of-state
students.
In North Carolina, Kiplinger's ranks UNCW as the third best value in
public education, behind only the University of North Carolina and North
Carolina State University. Kiplinger's has rated UNCW in the top 5 public
universities in the state since 2003.
Jean
Beasley, founder and director of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue
and Rehabilitation Hospital, was recognized as an Albert Schweitzer
Honors Scholar.
This award is given annually by UNC Wilmington's Honors Scholars Program
and Randall Library to a person from the Cape Fear area who exemplifies
the attributes or interests of Albert Schweitzer.
The annual holiday
screening of Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life will be held
at 7 p.m. Dec. 19 in Kenan Auditorium. The third
annual Clarence Award will be
presented, recognizing someone in the greater Wilmington
community who, without fanfare or publicity, gives unselfishly to others
to make a real difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

UNCW rallied from a double-digit deficit for the second consecutive
game to remain unbeaten on the new season with a 107-95 victory over
visiting Troy in men’s college basketball Nov. 17 in Trask
Coliseum.
The Seahawks, who erased a 18-point deficit in their season-opening win over
Appalachian State, came from 16 points down to improve to 2-0. The Trojans dropped
to 0-2 following their second loss in three days.
UNCW has broken the century mark in all three appearances this season, including
an exhibition game vs. St. Andrews (101) and regular season matchups with ASU
(108) and Troy (107).
Sophomore Greta Luksyte scored a game-high 15 points to lead four Seahawk
players in double figures as UNCW defeated Winston-Salem State,
65-50, in women’s collegiate basketball action Nov. 15 in the
ISES Cancer Awareness Classic, hosted by Elon University. The Seahawks
improved to 2-0 on the young season while the Lady Rams dropped to 0-2.
UNCW is back in action Thursday, Nov. 20, in its home opener as it takes
on UNC Greensboro in a noon tip-off. The game will serve as the second
annual “Seahawks
Tomorrow” contest,
with area elementary school students attending the game as part of a
day of activities with Seahawk student-athletes on the UNCW campus.
– UNCW is poised
to receive a second $1 million endowment gift from the Bernard Osher
Foundation to support the continued good work of the Osher Lifelong Learning
Institute (OLLI) at UNCW. The Osher Foundation is
asking UNCW to demonstrate a sustained membership of more than 1,000
individuals. There were 1,006 members for the 2007-08
academic year, and there are 500 members as of the
fall semester. Your membership will assist UNCW in meeting the 2008-09
