With several tosses of teal sand, UNCW trustees and administrators officially
broke ground Oct. 23 for the $30.1 million 75,000-square-foot School of
Nursing Building. The facility will be fully equipped with the technology
and resources required for a 21st century nursing education and assure
that the School of Nursing will be able to work side-by-side with its
partners in the field of biopharmaceutical research, social work and health
and applied human sciences. Completion is anticipated by August 2010.
Betty Cameron and her children, in their capacity as directors of the
Dan Cameron Family Foundation Inc., established a distinguished
professorship at UNCW to
develop and lead efforts to improve the effectiveness of the local nonprofit
sector and increase philanthropy.
As the fate of the national economy is debated, the local economy of
Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties is forecast to expand approximately
2.5 percent during 2008. This forecast by UNCW business faculty members
William "Woody" Hall
Jr. and Ravija Badarinathi is slightly below the expected growth previously
projected for 2008. Although low by historic standards, this forecasted
growth exceeds that for North Carolina and the nation.

cotton and bamboo shirts, reusable totes, bikes and skateboards.
MARBIONC, a biotechnology development program at the UNCW Center for
Marine Science, received a second patent for marine-derived substances
that may be beneficial in the treatment of cystic fibrosis and asthma.

Ten UNCW men’s basketball games will be televised
on five different networks during the upcoming hoops campaign. The Seahawks,
20-13 one year ago, make their 2008-09 television debut Nov. 19 when
they travel to Winston-Salem to battle Wake Forest in a game scheduled
to be aired by Raycom Sports at Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
With an outstanding track record of producing top-flight student-athletes, UNCW
has once again excelled in the latest graduation success rates released by the
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Seahawks posted a graduation
success rate (GSR) of 90 percent overall, with nearly half of UNCW’s teams
racking up a perfect 100 percent mark. UNCW stood fifth out of the state’s
17 NCAA Division I institutions, trailing only Davidson, Duke, Wake Forest and
Campbell in the rankings.
