A FAMILY TRADITION
Twenty five students and their families were greeted by Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo at the Legacy Pinning Ceremony Oct. 18. Jason Wheeler, alumni association president, explained how special this group is to UNCW. Rob McInturf, director of UNCW Alumni Relations, presented the students with their legacy pins which were put on by their family members.

TRIANGLE ALUMNI MEET
Nearly 100 Triangle area alumni and friends met UNCW administrators, faculty and staff at the Prestonwood Country Club in Cary Oct. 16. Matt Glova ’07 discussed how he was moved to start connecting to UNCW alumni in the Triangle area, and Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo regaled the group with stories about outstanding students and updates on the development of the campus. The night concluded with a review of the Triangle Area Alumni Chapter bylaws and a vote on officers for the Triangle Area Alumni Chapter: Matt Glova '07, president; Dawn King LaSure '83, vice president; and Nikki Howard '96, secretary.

School of Nursing groundbreaking

GROUND BREAKING HELD FOR SCHOOL OF NURSING BUILDING
With several tosses of teal sand, UNCW trustees and administrators officially broke ground Oct. 23 for the $30.1 million 75,000-square-foot School of Nursing Building. The facility will be fully equipped with the technology and resources required for a 21st century nursing education and assure that the School of Nursing will be able to work side-by-side with its partners in the field of biopharmaceutical research, social work and health and applied human sciences. Completion is anticipated by August 2010.

CAMERON PROFESSORSHIP TO HELP AREA NON-PROFITS
Betty Cameron and her children, in their capacity as directors of the Dan Cameron Family Foundation Inc., established a distinguished professorship at UNCW to develop and lead efforts to improve the effectiveness of the local nonprofit sector and increase philanthropy.

GROWTH PREDICTED FOR LOCAL ECONOMY
As the fate of the national economy is debated, the local economy of Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties is forecast to expand approximately 2.5 percent during 2008. This forecast by UNCW business faculty members William "Woody" Hall Jr. and Ravija Badarinathi is slightly below the expected growth previously projected for 2008. Although low by historic standards, this forecasted growth exceeds that for North Carolina and the nation.

CLARENCE AWARD NOMINEES SOUGHT
UNCW is looking for an unsung hero to receive angel wings Dec. 19 as part of the annual holiday screening of Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life at 7 p.m. Dec. 19 in Kenan Auditorium. The third annual Clarence Award will recognize someone in the greater Wilmington community who, without fanfare or publicity, gives unselfishly to others to make a real difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Ecoteal store openingECOTEAL OFFERS SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVES
In conjunction with Sustainability Day on Oct. 21, UNCW celebrated the grand opening of ECOteal, a sustainability and transportation retail store located in the Fisher University Union. It offers items such as water-powered clocks, organic cotton and bamboo shirts, reusable totes, bikes and skateboards.

MARBIONC, a biotechnology development program at the UNCW Center for Marine Science, received a second patent for marine-derived substances that may be beneficial in the treatment of cystic fibrosis and asthma.

MEN'S HOOPS TV SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED
Ten UNCW men’s basketball games will be televised on five different networks during the upcoming hoops campaign. The Seahawks, 20-13 one year ago, make their 2008-09 television debut Nov. 19 when they travel to Winston-Salem to battle Wake Forest in a game scheduled to be aired by Raycom Sports at Lawrence Joel Coliseum.

SEAHAWKS SOAR IN THE CLASSROOM
With an outstanding track record of producing top-flight student-athletes, UNCW has once again excelled in the latest graduation success rates released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Seahawks posted a graduation success rate (GSR) of 90 percent overall, with nearly half of UNCW’s teams racking up a perfect 100 percent mark. UNCW stood fifth out of the state’s 17 NCAA Division I institutions, trailing only Davidson, Duke, Wake Forest and Campbell in the rankings.

SURRY COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTS MOSS
Husband. Father. UNC Wilmington men’s basketball coach. Now Benny Moss has added another title: Hall of Famer. The third-year UNCW skipper was inducted into the Surry County Sports Hall of Fame Saturday. The Pilot Mountain native will join six other athletes, coaches and volunteers from the northwest North Carolina County in being recognized.
