ALUMNI ASSOCIATION EMBRACES NEW LEADERSHIP
The UNCW Alumni Association Board of Directors is an elected group of volunteers that help guide and advise the association. Its goal is to engage alumni in the life of our university. We are proud to welcome the new leadership for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. Chair Sandra McClammy '03, '09M works as an on-air personality for Cumulus Broadcasting, recently taught at UNCW and is an English professor at Cape Fear Community College. Vice Chair Wallace West '63 is the owner and CEO of Coastal Carolina Streetscapes, LLC. Secretary Lauren Scott '06, '10M works at UNCW as the assistant director for first year admissions. ALUMNI AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHT
The alumni association is accepting nominations for the 2012 Outstanding Alumni Awards. Each year award recipients are honored from three categories: Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, Young Alumnus of the Year and Citizen of the Year. Find out more about the 2011 honorees and the award criteria.
UNCW WELCOMES STUDENTS BACK TO CAMPUS
The Move-In tradition continues Aug. 20 when faculty, staff and community volunteers unpack vehicles and get approximately 2,000 incoming freshmen situated in their new homes on campus. The following week is action-packed with activities ranging from the Trask Trek, convocation, Beach Day, fireworks and much more. Classes begin Aug. 24.
NEW POET LAUREATE HAS UNCW TIES
UNCW has a tie to Philip Levine, America’s new poet laureate. Levine was a visiting writer-in-residence in the spring of 1998. Creative writing was then part of the English department and chaired by Phil Furia.
FISKE GUIDE, PRINCETON REVIEW RECOMMEND UNCW
Two of the nation’s most prestigious guides to colleges have again recommended UNCW to prospective students and parents for its excellent academic programs. UNCW is included, for the third consecutive year, in the 2012 revised and updated edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges and is featured for the eighth consecutive year as one of 135 institutions named by The Princeton Review to the "Best in the Southeast" section of its website feature, "2012 Best Colleges: Region by Region."

MEN'S BASKETBALL - Matchups with Atlantic Coast Conference foes Maryland and Wake Forest and a pre-Christmas clash with Final Four participant VCU highlight the early portion of UNCW's men's basketball schedule for 2011-12.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Contests against Atlantic Coast Conference members Duke and NC State, a visit to Trask Coliseum from Atlantic 10 power Xavier and the Colonial Athletic Association opener against Drexel highlight the early portion of the UNCW women's basketball schedule for the 2011-12 season.
MEN'S GOLF - Reigning Colonial Athletic Association men's golf champion UNCW has released its schedule for the 2011-12 season and it looks to be one of the most challenging in the history of the program.
DIAMOND HAWKS TO HOST NATIONAL TEAMS
The UNCW baseball team will play both the USA and Canadian Junior National Teams next month at Brooks Field, marking the first time the Seahawks have faced teams at the international level.
RUNNERS HONORED FOR ACADEMICS
Bolstered by strong junior seasons in 2011, UNCW track and field athletes Bob Vanderham and Wil Zahorodny were named to 2011 NCAA Division I All-Academic team by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS SOUGHT
Nominations are being solicited for the ninth induction of the UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame, which is scheduled to take place in early 2012. The UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame honors former student-athletes, coaches and administrators, as well as longtime contributors. Thirty-seven individuals have been honored since the hall was established in 1998, including the inaugural inductee, former coach and department founder William J. Brooks.
