Biology
- BIO 240-241
Human Anatomy and Physiology (4 credits each; 8 credits total taught over two semesters, fall and spring)- No prerequisites
- Both courses count as one selection from this option for the minor
- BIO 335-BIOL 335
Genetics and Genetics Laboratory (3 credits lecture, 1 credit laboratory)- Pre-requisite: BIO 204 Principles of Biology: Cells (4 credits, lecture and laboratory). This course is a pre-requisite for Biology Majors, and for non-majors it may satisfy a basic studies requirement.
- Both courses, BIO 335 and BIOL 335 count as one selection from this option for the minor.
- BIOL 335 (the lab) may be taken after (in a different semester) than BIO 335, but this is not recommended.
- BIO 488
(EVS 488)
Forensic Environmental Science (3 credits)- Prerequisite: CHM 102 or equivalent or junior status (see instructor of this course for the semester you wish to take it if there are questions concerning this prerequisite).
- CHM 102 is General Chemistry (4 credits) and satisfies a basic studies requirement. However, CHM 102 has a prerequisite of CHM 101, General Chemistry (4 credits). This also satisfies a basic studies requirement.
- Choosing BIO 488 (EVS 488) as an option for the forensic science minor means that you will have had to take CHM 101 and CHM 102 beforehand. Chemistry courses are recommended for forensic science careers, so this is a good thing!
Chemistry
- CHM 380
Forensic Chemistry (4 credits, lecture and laboratory)- Prerequisites: CHM 211-CHML 211, Organic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry Lab which have prerequisites: CHM 102 and CHML 102, which is General Chemistry lecture and lab. CHM 102 has a prerequisite, which is CHM 101, General Chemistry lecture and lab.
- Choosing CHM 380 for the minor means that you will have had to have CHM 101, CHM 102 and CHML 102, CHM 211 and CHML 211 beforehand. These courses satisfy basic studies requirements and chemistry major requirements and are excellent foundation courses for future study and work in any forensic science. If chemistry is not your chosen major, you may want to consider both the chemistry and forensic science minor.
- CHM 417
Medicinal Chemistry (3 credits)- Prerequisites: CHM 212, Organic Chemistry, which has a lab, CHML 212 (mostly taken concurrently). CHM 211 and CHML 211 are needed before CHM 212 and CHML 212. CHM 211 and CHML 211 have CHM 102 and CHML 102 as prerequisites.
Note: If you are not a chemistry major or you are not planning a dual minor in chemistry and forensic science, you may want to consider taking a BIO course as part of the Group 1 forensic science minor requirement.
