Dr. Daniel Jones
National Oceanography Centre
Southampton, England

Since my PhD I have been working at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton using deep-water robots including remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles for marine ecological research.

I am fascinated by all aspects of marine and polar research, particularly in the remote, often cold, dark and deep recesses of the earth. I am also interested in the energy industry, especially oil and gas extraction and the potential for renewable energy. In addition to working on this project I coordinate a collaborative project between the global hydrocarbon industry and the science community. We use industry operated underwater robotic technology to massively expand global scientific access to the world’s deep seas. This project, SERPENT, sees me regularly visiting active oil and gas installations around the world to use their deep-water remotely operated vehicles for experimental and observational marine ecological work.
