Dr. Lance Roy
Mission Physician

I grew up in Chesapeake, VA and clearly remember trips to the Virginia Marine Science Museum in Virginia Beach during my school years. It was there that I first developed an interest in the marine environment that would eventually lead to my choosing a job as a Diving Medical Officer with the Navy. Following high school, I received a BA in Biology from Florida State University. There, I did research in protein crystallography. This was my initial exposure to research and taught me a great deal about the process of scientific exploration upon which I continue to rely. I then attended Washington University in St. Louis (MO) for medical school on a scholarship through the U. S. Navy. Planning on pursuing training in diving medicine, I completed my internship at Naval Medical Center San Diego before going to the Undersea Medical Officer Candidate course in Groton, CT and Panama City, FL. Upon graduation, I remained in Panama City at the Navy Experimental Diving Unit where I concentrate on testing of manned performance characteristics of various diving equipment. In July 2008, I will move to Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC to being residency training in Anesthesia. The opportunity to support the important work of NOAA's Aquarius is a great privilege and I look forward to an exciting and safe mission.
