Allison White Born February 16, 1977 in Natick, MA I grew up in a small coastal town twenty minutes south of Boston. I was always fascinated by the beauty and power of the ocean. I started scuba diving at fourteen while on a family vacation in St. Martin. Since then, I dive whenever I get the chance. I received a Bachelors of Science in marine biology at the College of Charleston, SC, in 1999. I participated in two programs during college to supplement my classroom education with fieldwork: the Sea Education Association and the School for Field Studies. I also taught scuba diving and volunteered as a first responder during college. Upon graduating I taught a summer class in Ichthyology (the biology of fishes) at the Duke University Marine Lab. While there, I was awarded the Our World-Underwater internship at NURC/UNCW. The six week internship was lengthened to three months when I volunteered to help up further with the rapid assessment and monitoring program. Things were going so well that I was eventually hired in December, 1999, as a research assistant. Through working on the rapid assessment and monitoring program I have learned a great deal about corals, scientific computer programs, and research methods. During this mission I will be help provide surface support for the aquanauts. I will help with still and video cameras, transfer data and help out where needed. In my spare time I like to do things outdoors. I also like to visit family and friends, or work on my underwater photography. |
