This is used so divers can talk to each other at remote work stations. An air pocket is captured under the plexiglass dome.

A sensor package that is used to measure temperature, salinity, current speed and direction, and depth. During missions, the S4 is cabled to Aquarius and data are downloaded to our network, microwaved to shore, and posted on the Aquarius web site in near-real time.

This sampling device is used to measure water quality. Lipid-filled membranes inside the canister absorb pollutants such as pesticides, hydrocarbons, and PCBs. The SPMD was deployed during training and will be recovered after one month and sent to a laboratory for analysis.

With training nearly complete Dr. Gittings comfortably cruises the reef. Note the twin 100 cf tanks, cave reels, radio housing, and if you look carefully you can see the green primary regulator hose wrapped under his arm and around his neck - it's supposed to be that way!
Rolling off the stern of the R/V Delta, Dr. Gittings takes the first plunge of the day. Training today consists of lost diver and lost line drills - without masks.

The added length is to make "air sharing" easier if it ever becomes necessary. Note the red cave diving reel that aquanauts use when they have to work at sites away from established navigation lines.
