Dr. Petersen grew up in Rapid City, SD and moved to Minneapolis, MN to attend the University of Minnesota. After obtaining a B.A. in physiology, he attended the University of Minnesota Medical School on a U.S. Navy scholarship. There he earned his M.D. degree and gained considerable experience in Emergency Medicine research. Dr. Petersen completed a surgical internship at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis before moving to Groton, CT to attend the Naval Undersea Medical Institute. As part of his training in Undersea Medicine, Dr. Petersen completed the Diving Medical Officer course at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center, qualifying as a U.S. Navy Deep Sea Diver. Dr. Petersen's past commands include Naval Hospital, Charleston, SC; Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit; and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Six. He is currently the Clinical Director for Diving Medicine at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, FL. There he is responsible for the medical care of diving casualties, routine medical care of students and staff, and teaching diving medicine. Dr. Petersen holds certification in U.S. Navy mixed gas diving, saturation diving, and Mark 16 closed circuit UBA diving, as well as civilian certification in SCUBA and NITROX.
