Sebastian Engel was born Feburary 21, 1974, in Berlin, Germany. After
spending much of his childhood in Germany and South America, he moved
to New Jersey when he was 12 years old. He received his high school diploma
and Abitur (German high school degree) from the German School of New York,
White Plains, New York. Subsequently, Sebastian attended Drew University
in Madison, New Jersey, and received his BA with a major in biology, and
minors in chemistry and environmental studies. Fascinated with marine
biology and chemical ecology he began his masters studies under Dr. J.R.
Pawlik at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Working through
UNCW's Center for Marine Science and the NOAA/National Undersea Research
Center, in Key Largo, Florida, he studied allelochemical interactions
between Caribbean sponges. Last year, Sebastian received his MS in Marine
Biology and is currently Dr. Pawlik's research technician.
