| Amanda Kahn The fascinating world of Marine Science first captivated me at Island Institute in the San Juan Islands in Washington State. There I had the opportunity to study the kelp forest ecosystems and kayak with Orca whales. I also began to explore the diversity of plants with an ethno-botany class. I attended Mercer County College in New Jersey where I received associate degrees in Biology and Chemistry. I decided to further my education at the University of Tampa where I am currently a senior majoring in Marine Science and Biology with minors in Chemistry and Environmental Science. After graduating with my Bachelors degree in May 2002 I plan to attend graduate school to study marine botany. Currently, I am working with Dr. Kevin Beach on a summer research grant fellowship awarded by the University of Tampa. Part of the study is the effects of different epiphytes growing on Halimeda discoidea in a reef ledge 18 miles off of Fort Desoto, Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. There I am measuring the effect of the epiphytes on the photosynthetic productivity as well as growth rates of the Halimeda. Another part will be a study conducted at NURC in Key Largo on the range of which the chemicals released by Dictyota affect the productivity of Halimeda tuna. I am looking forward to the amazing opportunities I will have the chance to experience here at NURC/UNCW. It is a fantastic feeling to be underwater or on the boat and say, "This is our office!" I love working as a team to achieve our research goals and am excited to learn and discover something new every day. |
