| Laddie Akins Laddie Akins is the Executive Director of the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF), a nonprofit organization referred to as the underwater equivalent of the Audubon Society. Laddie grew up in South Georgia spending his time fishing and water skiing. Laddie's first connections to the underwater world were through the fish he caught. However, after putting on a mask he found they were more interesting to watch than catch. After snorkeling in the shallows of Twin Lakes, Georgia, to feed the bream, Laddie took up diving in the Florida Keys. He went on to become a SCUBA instructor and Coast Guard Licensed boat captain and worked for more than 12 years teaching diving before joining REEF to teach divers about fish. He has worked extensively in developing educational and fish survey programs for the Caribbean, Florida, Gulf of Mexico, California, Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii. Some of his favorite activities include lecturing and talking about marine life issues and field identification of fish. His dive experience includes logging thousands of scuba dives over the past 17 years and serving as team leader on over 40 field survey expeditions. He has participated as submarine pilot in the NOAA/ National Geographic sponsored Sustainable Seas Expeditions.
